Nottingham Forest and Newcastle United have both seen their opening bids rejected for a Tottenham midfielder.
Tottenham Hotspur have spent around £185m on two midfielders in the shape of Mateus Fernandes and Sandro Tonali this summer. The duo have future-proofed the club’s midfield unit, but at the same time, it has led to a couple of players seeking an exit.
Lucas Bergvall is one of those. The Swede is under contract at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium until June 2031 but has informed the club of his preference to seek an opportunity elsewhere this summer. He made 33 appearances for Spurs in all competitions last season, delivering a goal and five assists. In January, he underwent surgery after sustaining a high sprain on his left ankle and was sidelined until March.
The 20-year-old largely managed minutes off the bench under Roberto De Zerbi. And with the additions of Tonali and Fernandes, Lucas Bergvall has made up his mind to leave Tottenham after two seasons. He has already been the subject of a rejected offer from Nottingham Forest, who have identified the Swede as a replacement for Elliot Anderson.
Tottenham ‘offered’ Lucas Bergvall to Newcastle United
On Friday, Newcastle United launched their first proposal for the youngster. They made a £46m bid for Bergvall, which was immediately turned down by Tottenham.
It is not hard to see why Newcastle United might be looking to sign a central midfielder this summer. Tonali has joined De Zerbi’s forces in N17, while Bruno Guimaraes has agreed personal terms with our North London rivals Arsenal. Plus, the Magpies were beaten by Aston Villa to the signing of Switzerland international Johan Manzambi earlier this week.
Now, The Chronicle reporter Lee Ryder has revealed that Tottenham, looking to raise funds, offered Bergvall to Newcastle United. High-level talks have taken place between the clubs.
It remains to be seen just how keen Bergvall is on heading to Tyneside if it is indeed Tottenham who offered him to Newcastle. The Stockholm-born talent wants guaranteed regular first-team football, which he’d get at St James’ Park following Tonali’s exit. However, it has been reported that he wants to move to the City Ground and that Nottingham Forest are preparing a second offer of £45m.
Ideally, Bergvall now has two options to consider if he wants to continue his career in the Premier League. Spurs want around £50m to part ways with the Scandinavian talent, with the sole aim of reinvesting those funds into strengthening the forward areas of the pitch. It is clear that our club bosses are trying to ignite a bidding war between Forest and Newcastle for the 20-year-old. Will Bergvall’s destination be St James’ Park or the City Ground? Only time will tell.
