Tottenham are keen on adding firepower to their squad.
Tottenham Hotspur have shown no hesitation in backing Roberto de Zerbi and demonstrating their ambition in the transfer market, adopting a fresh approach that has been widely welcomed by the supporters. The club officials have signed six Premier League-proven, battle-tested players to rebuild De Zerbi’s squad.
It comes as no surprise that the North Londoners are also looking to strengthen their attack in the coming weeks. After scoring just 48 goals in the Premier League last season, signing a new striker and winger have become a necessity for Spurs.
The ACL injuries to Xavi Simons and Wilson Odobert has left De Zerbi with limited options off the left. Mathys Tel is currently the only left-wing option available, and that’s simply not enough for a side aiming to challenge for European spots next season.
Tottenham suffer blow in pursuit of Benfica star
It has been reported in recent weeks that Tottenham are interested in signing Benfica star Andreas Schjelderup. He caught the eye for Norway at the World Cup, scoring three goals and supplying an assist in six appearances. The young winger produced his best performance in the 2-1 win over Brazil in the Round of 16, chipping in with two assists, whilst scoring an outrageous goal in the defeat to England in the quarter-finals.
Tottenham have been among several clubs tracking Andreas Schjelderup, but they could miss out on signing him this summer. This is because, according to Portuguese outlet Correio da Manha (h/t Sporten), new Benfica manager Marco Silva wants to work with Schjelderup. The Portuguese tactician has had direct, open conversations with the 22-year-old and emphasised that he sees him as a ‘fundamental piece’ in his tactical system and his future project at Estadio da Luz.
However, the problem Silva faces is that the Norwegian talent wants to leave Benfica for a new adventure. The Premier League appeals to him, a far more competitive league than Liga NOS where the winger can challenge himself at a higher level.
That said, though, if Benfica decides to block a move for Schjelderup, it’d be a big blow to Tottenham’s plans to improve the wide areas. The onus will then be on our club chiefs to find an alternative target to Schjelderup and give a new winger to work with for De Zerbi.
