Tottenham could sell youngster to land English attacking midfielder.
With a number of impending exits, Tottenham seem quite poised for the next season. Europe’s top spenders so far, with nearly £230m worth of spending on upgrades, stand ready for another move as Roberto De Zerbi views Nottingham Forest’s 25 G/A star, Morgan Gibbs-White as a transfer target for the Lilywhites.
That is as per Football365. To facilitate a move for the 26-year-old attacking midfielder, Spurs are understood to have okayed the idea of parting ways with Lucas Bergvall. The versatile Swedish midfielder was in the thick of things in the middle of the park for Tottenham during the business end of last season, playing quite an important role in making sure the club didn’t see the drop down to the Championship.
The player’s time at Spurs seemed topsy-turvy right from Thomas Frank’s tenure, with very few minutes. Even though RDZ tried to convince the player of his future at N17, it doesn’t seem to be the case. In fact, Bergvall insisted on a move away and even submitted a transfer request to the club before the start of the World Cup.
Swap Deal?
A potential swap deal with Bergvall and MGW could see itself on the cards. Gibbs-White was a transfer target for the club last season as well, with James Maddison’s injury limiting the creative force in the middle for Tottenham. That long-standing admiration from the club could now come to the fore as the chances of this moving actually happening stand much higher than last term.
Signing Sandro Tonali and Mateus Fernandes, both defensive midfielders, established that attacking midfield reinforcement remained paramount. Gibbs-White would represent the third significant midfield addition, yet his tactical profile differs sufficiently from both Tonali and Fernandes to justify coexistence. His ability to operate as a number ten or right-sided attacking midfielder or even a central midfielder whenever needed provides flexibility that De Zerbi requires.
As for Bergvall, the midfielder possesses genuine talent yet requires a different environment for development. Nottingham Forest, with less competitive expectation, might facilitate progression that Tottenham’s circumstances preclude.
If negotiations conclude successfully, this could be Tottenham’s finest transfer window business. Converting departmental weakness into genuine improvement is not something we’re used to at the club, and this might just be the start of it.
