Serie A side set to compete with Tottenham for Norwegian winger.
Tottenham Hotspur have already spent a record total this summer, splashing out more than £235million, which has largely been made up of the Sandro Tonali, Mateus Fernandes and Jan Paul van Hecke deals. And they are showing no signs of slowing down, even though the incomings have been quiet in the last couple of weeks.
Roberto De Zerbi wants to improve the forward department with a couple of signings. A winger and a centre-forward appear to be on the Italian tactician’s agenda to boost the productivity of Tottenham’s attack next season. This has led to the North Londoners keeping tabs on Benfica winger Andreas Schjelderup.
Recent reports suggest that Tottenham are planning to make an offer for Andreas Schjelderup, who impressed for Norway at the 2026 World Cup. The 22-year-old’s reputation was enhanced at the recently concluded World Cup, where he bagged a goal and three assists in six appearances. However, Spurs could now face competition from a Serie A club.
Tottenham face AS Roma challenge for Andreas Schjelderup
According to transfer journalist Gianluca Di Marzio (h/t Sporten), AS Roma have set their sights on Andreas Schjelderup. The winger’s showings at the World Cup have encouraged the Italian side to consider a move for him.
New Benfica manager Marco Silva has insisted that the Norwegian international is not for sale and wants to keep the attacker as part of his plans this season. However, increasing interest from several clubs could create pressure on Silva and Benfica if the player pushes for a better opportunity elsewhere.
AS Roma showing interest means Tottenham will not have a straightforward way to sign Schjelderup. Crysencio Summerville’s departure from West Ham to Al Hilal has led to both Tottenham and Roma switching their focus on the Benfica star, who registered 10 goals and seven assists from 43 matches last season.
Spurs must up their ante to sign Schjelderup. The Norway winger could solve Tottenham’s left-wing woes, adding pace, unpredictability and goals to the attack. He’d also be a strong option to compete with Mathys Tel and Mohammed Kudus on the flanks, with Xavi Simons and Wilson Odobert out for the foreseeable future with ACL injuries.
That said, it will be interesting to see whether the young attacker from Benfica is tempted by the prospect of playing in Serie A and the Champions League, or by becoming part of De Zerbi’s revolution in N17.
