Tottenham’s London counterparts have expressed their interest in signing Cristian Romero.
Tottenham Hotspur have started shipping out some deadwood from the squad to free up space for more new arrivals for the 2026/27 season.
Luka Vuskovic, Will Lankshear, Radu Dragusin and Alfie Devine have been moved on, and the process to offload some more is going on. Cristian Romero is ‘100% certain’ to leave the club this summer after growing tired with life in England as a result of Tottenham’s lack of competitiveness at the top level. Spurs have already replaced their skipper adequately by bringing in Marcos Senesi and Jan Paul van Hecke.
The Argentine, who was recently on World Cup duty, has been heavily linked with a move to Inter Milan lately. Inter Milan and Tottenham are in direct talks about a deal for Cristian Romero, who endured a mixed 2025/26 campaign. Barcelona are also keen, but the Nerazzurri are leading the race for the central defender’s signature.
Arsenal linked with shock swoop for Cristian Romero
Now, according to Italian newspaper Corriere dello Sport (h/t TEAMtalk), Arsenal have been linked with a shock move for Romero. Spurs are ready to lower their £42.5m price tag to facilitate the South American star’s smooth departure, and shockingly, Arsenal have entered the race to sign him.
The Gunners are set to be without their dominant central defender William Saliba for months after deciding to undergo back surgery. This has perhaps led to them expressing an interest in Romero as a potential replacement for Saliba.
Direct transfers between Spurs and Arsenal are exceptionally rare due to the long-standing, bitter rivalry between the North London clubs. Since joining Tottenham from Atalanta in 2021, Romero has established himself as the defensive cornerstone of the squad. The 2026 World Cup finalist has earned widespread praise for his ball-playing ability, tough-tackling, aerial prowess and leadership skills.
Losing a player of his experience and winning mentality to a direct rival would represent a significant setback for De Zerbi’s club. Ideally, Tottenham would not sanction Romero’s sale to Arsenal at any cost. Furthermore, whether the Argentine would be keen on making a controversial switch across the town and tarnishing his legacy at White Hart Lane appears unlikely.
The Cordoba-born defensive wall’s ideal destination looks to be Inter. The Nerazzurri have had direct talks with Romero’s camp. The Italian champions are also in negotiations with Tottenham, which shows their commitment to bringing the central defender to Milan.
