Inter Milan sporting director Piero Ausilio has confirmed the club’s interest in the defender, revealing talks have already taken place with Tottenham and the defender’s agent.
Inter Milan sporting director Piero Ausilio has publicly confirmed that the Serie A giants are actively pursuing Tottenham Hotspur defender Cristian Romero. As reported by Spurs Army on X via Fabrizio Romano, Ausilio verified that preliminary discussions have taken place with both Tottenham and the Argentine defender’s representative.
The public acknowledgement marks a significant escalation in Inter’s search for a top-tier central defender ahead of the new campaign. It is also worth noting that Premier League rivals Arsenal have also been linked with a shock move for Romero.
Addressing the transfer rumors, Ausilio made no secret of Inter Milan’s interest in bringing the 28-year-old World Cup winner back to Italian football.
“We are interested for sure, it’s true. We spoke to the agent and Tottenham. We will see what happens.”
The confirmation follows reports that Romero’s agent, Ciro Palermo, arrived in Milan to meet with Inter directors as negotiations begin to gather momentum.
Tottenham Set €50 Million Asking Price
Although Tottenham are open to discussing a potential transfer, the North London side are holding firm on their financial valuation. Spurs have set a minimum price tag of €50 million before considering a sale.
Because Romero extended his commitment to Tottenham on a long-term contract running through 2029, Spurs maintain a strong bargaining position during negotiations. However, with head coach Roberto De Zerbi overseeing a squad restructuring, the club hierarchy may sanction a deal if Inter meet their asking price.
A return to Italy would mark a familiar destination for Romero, who previously established himself as one of Serie A’s elite defenders during successful spells at Genoa and Atalanta.
With Inter seeking a proven leader to anchor their backline following recent defensive departures, Romero has emerged as the club’s primary target for the summer transfer window.
