Tottenham youngster has emerged as a target for Benfica.
Tottenham Hotspur have some key decisions to make during the final five weeks of the summer transfer window.
Another midfielder could be added to Roberto De Zerbi’s squad despite the arrivals of Sandro Tonali and Mateus Fernandes. This is because Lucas Bergvall is seeking a move away from N17 for regular game time, which he feels will be difficult to get next season if he stays at the club. Sunderland have reportedly tabled a big-money bid for Bergvall, and Spurs have a decision to make whether to accept it or not.
The likes of Cristian Romero, Guglielmo Vicario and Richarlison have all been linked with an exit as well. And now there is another player who is wanted by a European club.
Benfica submit bid for Tottenham left-back
Souza has been absent from the pre-season tour to Australia and New Zealand. The left-back had been ill and missed the opening days of pre-season, and it is believed that he has remained at Hotspur Way to regain his fitness. Well, that hasn’t stopped him from being linked with a departure from Spurs.
According to Brazilian outlet Diario do Peixe, Benfica have submitted a €20m offer for Souza. Spurs are currently evaluating the proposal.
If Benfica have indeed tabled a €20m offer, the North Londoners would stand to make a quick profit on Souza, whom they signed from Santos in January for around €15m. After emerging as one of Brazil’s brightest young defensive talents, Spurs quickly acted and signed him. Barcelona, Bayern Munich and other European clubs had all kept tabs on his development while he was at Santos, but Tottenham decided to act and bring the Brazilian to N17.
Souza managed only a handful of appearances during the second half of last season. Under Roberto De Zerbi, the 20-year-old fell completely out of favour. De Zerbi used Destiny Udogie and Djed Spence at left-back across the last seven games, with the youngster on the periphery.
However, that doesn’t mean the Italian tactician and the club bosses do not rate Souza. That said, whether Tottenham are truly considering Benfica’s proposal remains to be seen. It is very unlikely that the Lilywhites decide to part ways with the left-back, who has been nominated for this year’s Golden Boy award.
Following Andy Robertson’s arrival on a free transfer from Liverpool, the Hotspur Way chiefs must loan out Souza to a competitive European league. If Benfica are open to signing him on loan without an option or obligation to buy, Tottenham must sanction it.
