Roberto De Zerbi has praised a 20yo star’s versatility, describing the Tottenham youngster as a key player capable of excelling in multiple positions.
Tottenham Hotspur head coach Roberto De Zerbi has praised Archie Gray, highlighting the youngster’s unique ability to adapt across multiple roles as a major luxury for the coaching staff. Speaking to the press after Tottenham’s pre-season win over Auckland FC, via Football London, the Italian manager explained why having a tactical chameleon like Gray is invaluable for squad flexibility.
De Zerbi acknowledged that while young players often benefit from establishing a primary position long-term, Gray’s open mindset and technical range allow him to cover critical gaps across the team whenever called upon:
“It’s lucky for me when you have these type of players who are able to play in different positions. Okay, it’s important for him to fix one position, one favourite position but at the end, he has to be open to cover different positions on the pitch. He can play as a right back, as a left back, as a midfielder.”
The Spurs manager noted that operating in varied positions actually accelerates a player’s football IQ rather than hindering their development. According to De Zerbi, shifting roles forces intelligent players to adapt their body shape, spatial perception, and decision-making on the ball:
“Nothing changes for smart players. A smart player, I think, is improving in the knowledge on the pitch, because changing position, you change body shape, you change direction when you receive the ball and when you give the ball.”
Roberto De Zerbi explains why Archie Gray’s versatility is a major asset
Gray’s capacity to seamlessly transition between full-back duties on either flank and central midfield roles provides De Zerbi with immense tactical flexibility during matches.
Regardless of where he lines up on any given matchday, De Zerbi emphasized that Gray remains a central figure in his vision for Tottenham:
“But he’s an important player for me, even if he can play in different positions.”
As Spurs build toward the new campaign, Gray’s tactical maturity and elite footballing IQ ensure he will play a pivotal role in De Zerbi’s fluid tactical system.
