Cristian Romero has been linked with an exit.
Tottenham Hotspur skipper Cristian Romero has been highly attributed to links away from Hotspur Way this summer, with Italian giants Inter Milan pursuing a move for the Argentine World Cup winner.
And with the former Atalanta man closing in on a possible exit, Tottenham will have to appoint a new captain under Roberto De Zerbi before the commencement of the new season.
Romero exit opens space for new captain at N17
The North Londoners had given Romero the skipper armband after then-captain Heung-Min Son bid adieu to the Lilywhites after an iconic time at N17.
But Romero has barely been the skipper that brought the club together. Time and again he gave interviews that forced controversies, while other times he was either injured or putting in an underpar performance on the pitch.
Last season when he was not available, his defensive partner in crime, Micky van de Ven, used to take up the armband duty.
And if we are thinking more recently, Leeds United academy graduate Archie Gray took up the captain armband in the Lilywhites’ preseason games against Auckland FC and Sydney FC.
And now Son himself has named a couple of players who can take on the skipper role going into the new season.
Son predicts Tottenham’s next captain
The South Korean international, speaking via Shoot for Love’s YouTube channel, insists that either James Maddison or Micky Van de Ven could can take up the captaincy role if Romero were to depart. He said:
“I think there are quite a lot of good candidates, like James Maddison or Micky van de Ven.”
Tottenham have also brought in highly experienced Andy Robertson, who can also make a claim for captaincy given that he already dons the armband for his Scotland national team. He was given the armband by Roberto De Zerbi after he came on against Sydney FC earlier today, showing how much value the staff puts in his expertise.
And given that he could end up being a possible starter at N17, he can also stake his claim to take up the starting role at N17.
Whether Robertson gets the armband or not is a different story; he would surely be an appreciated addition to the leadership group at Hotspur Way.
That being said, either Van de Ven or James Maddison is a worthy candidate to take up that skipper’s armband for the North Londoners.
If it were up to you, who out of Andy Robertson, Van de Ven, and Maddison would you want to take up the skipper’s role at N17? Let us know your thoughts in the comments below.
