Tottenham have arguably been the busiest EPL club this transfer window.
If there is one thing that Premier League clubs cannot resist, it’s compounding on their interest as soon as decently rated South American talent becomes available.
So when Tottenham fans find out the club’s interest in signing a teenage winger from Argentine side River Plate, it will surprise nobody.
Tottenham have another chance of landing long-term target
There is precedent to this. Starting with that Souza transfer back in January that raised eyebrows, you always got the Alejo Veliz punt before it. This shows that Tottenham as a club are never far away from pushing to bring in one of South America’s young players.
That being said, some will be more successful than others, but that is just the nature of this young wonder kid strategy.
Tottenham has well-documented interest in Ian Subiabre. The Lilywhites have been linked with him for a while alongside fellow London side Chelsea, who are also right in the mix for his signatures.
But while both clubs had been pushing for his signature, it looks like things have turned sour in Buenos Aires, and that could play into Spurs’ hands.
River Plate ready to sell Ian Subiabre for a tiny fee
As per a recent report from El Intransigente, the 19-year-old’s relationship with his current employers has broken down over the past few months. So much so that he has been training on his own since July, showing how his days at Monumental Stadium are numbered (especially given how many clubs are interested in signing him).
He apparently turned up in some sort of “intercountry” tournament while being on the books at River. And that is something the chiefs at the Argentine club didn’t like, which ended up with the club deciding to sell him, and as we write this, his representatives are now busy trying to find their client a new club.
That being said, the aforementioned report states that the teenager may prefer a move to MLS side DC United, who are said to have already opened talks with River Plate over a possible transfer for the winger. He will cost somewhere around €6.8m (£5.9m), which is a small fee given the inflated market we have at our disposal.
Alongside Chelsea, Tottenham, and DC United, Danish outfit Midtjylland has also expressed “concrete interest” in signing him. But he doesn’t want to move to Denmark.
