Tottenham have been dealt a blow in their pursuit of top attacking target.
It has been a very busy summer for Tottenham Hotspur, who have spent more than £235million to improve their squad, particularly in defence and midfield. With the defence and midfield addressed, attention is now turning to the attack.
Spurs wants a couple of fresh attacking faces, with Roberto De Zerbi promising another ‘bomba’ or two in his recent admission during the pre-season tour of New Zealand and Australia. After losing Xavi Simons and Wilson Odobert to ACL injuries in the second half of last season, a winger is on the club’s agenda. The need for a new No.9 is also obvious, with Richarlison potentially on his way out and Dominic Solanke in need of competition.
Bournemouth’s Eli Junior Kroupi appeared to be Tottenham’s primary target to bolster the forward department. However, following the Frenchman’s metatarsal injury in training that is set to keep him sidelined for three to four months after surgery, the N17 chiefs are scrambling for alternatives. And it looks like the Lilywhites have revived their interest in a centre-forward they wanted during the winter transfer window.
Brentford striker back on Tottenham’s radar
Tottenham were reportedly interested in signing Igor Thiago in the winter transfer window, but Brentford had no plans to let him leave midway through the campaign. The 25-year-old enjoyed a stunning campaign that saw him finish as the Premier League’s second top scorer. He bagged 22 goals in 38 appearances for Brentford, just five less than Manchester City superstar Erling Haaland.
This led to Igor Thiago getting selected in the Brazil squad for the World Cup, although he played just once. Nonetheless, he remains hugely coveted in the Premier League, and according to reliable club insider SZYComps on X, Thiago is back on Tottenham’s striker shortlist.
What De Zerbi will like about Thiago is his ability to score all kinds of goals. The Brazilian is also an expert penalty taker, having netted eight last season. The striker is also a real handful for the opposition and works extremely hard off the ball. He’d give Tottenham a focal point in attack and a clinical approach in front of goal.
However, Spurs will run into a problem in trying to secure a deal for Thiago, given that he only signed a contract extension with Brentford back in February. The South American striker put pen to paper on a new five-year contract, locking him down to the Gtech Community Stadium until 2031. This puts Brentford in a commanding position over any transfer negotiations.
It remains to be seen whether the 25-year-old would be keen on a move to White Hart Lane, especially after De Zerbi’s side failed to qualify for Europe.
