They are now actively working on departures to ensure they can register the centre-back immediately.
Romero’s eventful time at Spurs is coming to an end. The 2026 World Cup finalist has made 156 appearances since he joined Tottenham in 2021 and guided the club to Europa League success last year, but served four separate suspensions during a tough 2025-26 campaign. De Zerbi has made it clear he intends to build around players fully committed to the club’s long-term project and vision, having acknowledged that some key figures are seeking fresh challenges.
For Inter, securing an agreement on personal terms with Romero represents a major step towards getting a deal done. Should he join, Cristian Chivu would get an experienced defender accustomed to Italian football, having previously starred for Genoa, Juventus, and Atalanta. He’d be a significant signing for the Italian championship as they aim to solidify their backline ahead of a gruelling campaign.
