Tottenham have tabled their first offer for the highly-rated Benfica attacker.
Tottenham Hotspur have looked to put last season’s relegation battle firmly behind them by spending big this summer. They have spent above £230 million on three new faces, whilst snapping up three free agents to significantly bolster Roberto De Zerbi’s squad.
Spurs are clearly not done yet. De Zerbi wants a couple of attackers at least to improve the creativity and goal threat of his side. The North London club are yet to make a new addition in attack, but they are being linked with several players.
Savinho remains Spurs’ primary attacking target, and our club chiefs are doing everything possible to sign him this summer. Another winger who has emerged on the radar is Benfica’s Andreas Schjelderup.
Tottenham make first offer for Andreas Schjelderup
Recent reports suggested that Tottenham were planning to make an offer for Andreas Schjelderup, who has caught the attention after an impressive second half of the season for Benfica and his displays for Norway at the World Cup. He registered 10 goals and seven assists in 43 appearances for Benfica in the 2025/26 season, and continued his year’s strong form at the World Cup with a goal and three assists in six outings.
According to Portuguese outlet Now (h/t Bola na Rede), Spurs have tabled their first offer for Schjelderup. We have offered €45m plus a further €10m in bonuses to take the overall package to €55m.
Interestingly, Benfica have responded quickly. Instead of rejecting the bid, they have told Tottenham to restructure their deal. The Portuguese giants would prefer to receive €50m as a guaranteed fee and the remaining €5m comprising performance-related bonuses. Precisely, the proposal represents the first formal bid made by the Premier League club.
The Norwegian international isn’t short of suitors. Apart from Tottenham, several big clubs from the Premier League have also been vying for the 22-year-old’s signature. Recently, AS Roma have entered the race for the Benfica winger. However, Tottenham have been consistently pushing hard to get a deal done, and we have now also tabled an opening bid.
Despite new Benfica boss Marco Silva insisting that Schjelderup is not for sale and wants him as part of his plans in the forthcoming season, the Portuguese’s club not rejecting Tottenham’s bid is a clear sign that they are open to offers for their prized asset. And their position has weakened as the player is reluctant to sign a contract extension offer.
After the Eagles swiftly responded to the first offer, the ball is now back in Tottenham’s court. The Lilywhites must quickly structure their deal as per Benfica’s requirement and get a deal for the highly-rated Schjelderup over the line. There is no point in negotiating with Benfica anymore as the season starts in a few weeks.
