Atlético Madrid have reportedly made ‘this’ Tottenham defender their top defensive target, with Diego Simeone keen to bring the Argentine to Spain.

Atlético Madrid have made Tottenham Hotspur defender Cristian Romero their main defensive target for the summer transfer window, according to transfer specialist Matteo Moretto reporting via MARCA and shared by Last Word On Spurs on X.

The Spanish side are currently positioned as the frontrunners to secure the 28-year-old World Cup winner, provided they can first generate the necessary transfer capital through player departures.

Diego Simeone has long admired his fellow countryman’s aggressive, press-resistant style of play, viewing Romero as the ideal defensive anchor to lead Atlético’s backline.

While Serie A champions Inter Milan have also held concrete interest in securing a deal, reports indicate that Romero’s personal priority is a move to La Liga. Having previously spent time in Italy with Atalanta and Juventus prior to his move to North London, the Argentine international is eager for a new challenge in Spanish football.

Tottenham Hotspur have already laid the groundwork for a potential departure by proactively bolstering their central defensive options under head coach Roberto De Zerbi. With high-profile arrivals like Jan Paul van Hecke entering the squad this summer, North London officials have ensured that De Zerbi’s backline remains resilient regardless of outgoing business.

Furthermore, Tottenham hold a firm stance on Romero’s financial valuation, holding out for a package in excess of €45 million–€50 million. While Spurs are willing to respect the player’s career ambitions, they will not sanction a discount, placing the onus directly on interested clubs to meet their asking price before the window closes.

Squad Outgoings Key to Unlocking Madrid Deal

Despite holding the advantage in player preference, Atlético Madrid face financial parameters that mandate player sales before submitting a formal proposal. Colchoneros executives are actively working to finalize squad departures to free up wage margin and build the budget required to satisfy Tottenham’s valuation.

Tottenham head coach Roberto De Zerbi has acknowledged Romero’s ambition to seek a new challenge following five seasons at Hotspur Way. With Spurs actively re-tooling their defensive department this summer, negotiations between the two clubs are expected to accelerate once Atlético complete their necessary outgoing transfers.
