Legendary Italian goalkeeper Gianluigi Buffon has publicly endorsed Tottenham Hotspur shot-stopper Guglielmo Vicario as an ideal candidate to take over the starting gloves at Juventus.
Speaking on Sky Sport and relayed by Italian journalist Nicolò Schira on X, the former Azzurri captain highlighted Vicario’s proven international experience, Premier League consistency, and recent European silverware as clear indicators of his readiness for Serie A’s highest level.
Evaluating Juventus’ active search for a new goalkeeper, Buffon offered a ringing endorsement of Vicario’s character and pedigree:
“He’s been in the National Team for 3-4 years and he’s the Tottenham goalkeeper who won the Europa League… I think Vicario is a goalkeeper who provides ample guarantees for a big team like Juve.”
Having worked closely alongside Vicario during his time as team manager for the Italian national setup, Buffon’s seal of approval carries significant weight in Turin, where Juventus executives are finalizing their transfer priorities for the position.
Vicario’s Changing Role at Hotspur Way
Buffon’s comments coincide with a period of transition for Vicario in North London. Since joining Tottenham in 2023, the 29-year-old goalkeeper established himself as a fan favorite and played a key role during Spurs’ victorious Europa League run.
However, following an injury layoff late last season, young Czech goalkeeper Antonin Kinsky seized the starting position under head coach Roberto De Zerbi. With Kinsky signing a long-term contract extension and establishing himself as De Zerbi’s preferred option, Vicario was omitted from Tottenham’s pre-season tour squad, signalling that a summer departure is increasingly likely.
Juventus have identified Vicario as a primary target to solidify their defensive unit ahead of the upcoming Serie A campaign. While alternative options such as Parma’s Zion Suzuki remain under internal consideration, Vicario’s direct experience in European competitions and domestic familiarity with Italian football give him a distinct advantage.
With club-to-club inquiries advancing and Buffon adding his influential voice to the move, a potential return to Italy for the former Empoli star appears to be gaining rapid momentum.
