Tottenham are scouring the transfer market to replace Inter Milan-bound Djed Spence.
Tottenham Hotspur has already splashed £237million on new recruits, with Sandro Tonali, Mateus Fernandes and Jan Paul van Hecke taking up much of that spend. But they are yet to add any forwards, and that is expected to change over the coming weeks.
Spurs are said to be prioritising a move for a winger and a centre-forward, but the potential departure of Djed Spence could force a rethink. Inter Milan have agreed a €30 million fee with Tottenham for the signing of Spence, who wants to play regularly in the upcoming season. The Lilywhites want to sell the England international, with head coach Roberto De Zerbi understood to not view him as an essential part of his plans for the 2026/27 season.
Tottenham looking at full-back options to replace Djed Spence
According to reliable club insider Szyexcl on X, Tottenham are looking at full-back options currently. This is the latest development, as Spence nears a move to Inter Milan.
Spence became a surprise inclusion in Thomas Tuchel’s England squad for the 2026 FIFA World Cup earlier this summer. Although the full-back impressed during the tournament, Spurs are keen to cash in after his stock skyrocketed as a result. He has enjoyed an extended break after England’s run to a third-place finish in the United States.
The 26-year-old’s potential exit would leave De Zerbi with just Pedro Porro as the recognised right-back in the squad. Porro hasn’t featured in the pre-season campaign yet as he’s been enjoying a well-earned break following his exceptional World Cup-winning campaign with Spain. However, he is set to return to Hotspur Way this week, giving him time to prepare for the season-opener vs. Brentford.
This makes it so important for the North Londoners to recruit a right-back in the next couple of weeks. No European football means the entire focus will be on the Premier League, but to be competitive for a 38-game season, De Zerbi simply cannot rely only on Porro. The Italian boss needs an option to challenge and rotate with the Spaniard, especially during the festive period between mid-December and the early weeks of January. Archie Gray has played at right-back and could be an option, but the club insider suggests the Englishman is not viewed as a back-up to Porro.
It remains to be seen who Spurs end up with as a possible replacement for Spence, as going into the new campaign without sufficient back-up to Porro would be extremely risky.
