Tottenham want to sign Liverpool star Cody Gakpo as quickly as possible.
Tottenham Hotspur are totally committed to signing attacking players in the final couple of weeks of the summer transfer window.
The Lilywhites have Cody Gakpo on their radar this summer, and their interest in the Liverpool winger has certainly intensified in the last few weeks. Roberto De Zerbi is a fan of the Netherlands international and has been pushing the club to bring him to N17.
This has led to Spurs tabling an opening £60 million bid for the Dutch star. However, fresh reports suggest that Liverpool have rejected that bid and are demanding more for the 27-year-old.
Tottenham agree personal terms with Cody Gakpo
While Spurs have failed to agree a fee with their first bid and are expected to table an improved offer, there is one positive update for the fans. According to a report from The Daily Mirror, Tottenham have reached an agreement on personal terms in principle with Gakpo as they look to lay the groundwork for a revamp of their attack.
New Liverpool boss Andoni Iraola does not want to lose Gakpo this summer, even though the Merseyside outfit are keen on signing a new first-choice left winger. Paris Saint-Germain star Bradley Barcola is Iraola’s No.1 target to bolster his squad’s wide options.
Gakpo is fully aware of the competition for places at Liverpool, with Rio Ngumoha usurping him in the pecking order on the left flank in the business end of last season. The Reds have already signed left-winger Victor Munoz from Osasuna, and should Barcola arrive, the Dutchman’s minutes will be limited. That has convinced the 27-year-old to look for a new challenge, and agreeing on personal terms in principle with Tottenham clearly demonstrates his ideal destination this summer.
Gakpo would enhance Spurs’ attack
Gakpo may be coming off an underwhelming season, but he still managed seven goals and five assists in the Premier League, down from 10 goals and five assists the year before. The tricky winger rebuilt his stock at this summer’s World Cup with three goals and an assist in four appearances.
At 27, the former PSV Eindhoven ace is at the peak of his powers and possesses the attributes to make an instant impact for De Zerbi’s side. Tottenham have held talks with the player’s camp, and there is every chance that De Zerbi made it clear to the Liverpool man just how crucial he could be to his plans in North London.
Spurs have shown ambition in the transfer market by splashing a record £237million so far this summer, and the direction in which the club are moving under De Zerbi’s leadership should tempt the Liverpool star to become a part too. Hopefully, the Lilywhites table the second bid for the versatile forward quickly and Liverpool accept it.
