Tottenham duo started in the 3-0 friendly win over Hoffenheim.
Tottenham Hotspur starlet Lucas Bergvall has made his intentions clear after handing in a transfer request internally in June. Concerns over his prospects of regular first-team football in the wake of the deals for Sandro Tonali and Mateus Fernandes have driven his desire for a new adventure this summer.
Head coach Roberto De Zerbi remains keen to keep the central midfielder but would not stand in his way if he pushes to leave Spurs. Nottingham Forest and Newcastle United have already seen their offers for Lucas Bergvall rejected last month. They have not given up on their pursuit of the 20-year-old and are expected to bid again.
Sandro Tonali praises Lucas Bergvall on social media
Despite the transfer speculation, Bergvall has been an integral part of Tottenham’s pre-season campaign under Roberto De Zerbi ever since returning early from the World Cup. The Swedish international has enjoyed regular minutes in his favoured double-pivot role in recent friendly matches.
The 20-year-old started in Tottenham’s 3-0 win over Hoffenheim at the weekend, partnering summer signing Sandro Tonali in the double pivot. Bergvall and Tonali played well, complementing each other and dictating the tempo of play.
After the game, Tonali was apparently left impressed by the Swedish star’s display against Hoffenheim, and he took to social media to appreciate his teammate. When Bergvall posted images on Instagram from the 3-0 win, the Italian international commented: “top player”, on the post. (h/t The Spurs Express on X).
Tottenham demand £60 million for Bergvall
Bergvall’s situation has become increasingly complicated heading into the new season. With competition for places increasing in the middle of the park, the Stockholm native fears his opportunities could become even more limited.
Since arriving at Spurs from IF Djurgarden in 2024, the midfielder has racked up two goals and nine assists in 78 appearances. Highly regarded at the club, it is not surprising that the Tottenham chiefs and De Zerbi want him to stay and continue his development in N17. With Forest and Newcastle planning to return with improved bids, the Lilywhites have slapped a £60 million asking price on Bergvall’s head.
It will be interesting to see whether any club meets Tottenham’s valuation of the Scandinavian prodigy.
