Tottenham have not lacked in showcasing intent and ambition under Roberto de Zerbi this summer

There was a sense of relief in and around N17 after Tottenham managed to escape relegation on the final day of the Premier League season in May. The Lilywhites were fortunate to see West Ham United take their place in the Championship instead. Thanks to the timely arrival of Roberto de Zerbi, the North Londoners secured their place in the top flight after convincingly beating Everton in their final game of the campaign.

However, finishing 17th for a second consecutive season also served as a wake-up call to everyone associated with the club. Roberto de Zerbi made it publicly known that Spurs would never be put in this position again, with the Italian tactician also outlining a long-term plan at N17 starting this season. And to their credit, the Lewis family did well to back the 47-year-old during the first half of the transfer window.

Spurs acted quickly and brought in the likes of Marcos Senesi, Jan Paul van Hecke, and Andy Robertson in quick succession to fix a leaky defence. On the other hand, the Lilywhites also surprised many with their intent after breaking the club’s transfer record twice, first with Mateus Fernandes and then with the signing of Sandro Tonali. They breached the £100m mark for the first time in the club’s history, showcasing immense ambition and intent under De Zerbi.

Tottenham fans have a lot to look forward from their new signings this season

It is fair to suggest that Tottenham have spent their money wisely on new players this summer. The Lilywhites have been smart with their business, targeting players who could instantly make an impact under Roberto de Zerbi at N17. They brought in Andy Robertson, Martin Dubravka, and Marcos Senesi on free transfers to bolster the defence, before spending a significant fee on Jan Paul van Hecke to complete their defensive rebuild.

That was not enough for the North Londoners, as they showed further intent and fended off competition from other clubs to land Mateus Fernandes and Sandro Tonali for significant fees. Now, Matt Law has revealed what fans should expect from their new signings under Roberto de Zerbi as the new Premier League campaign commences in a few days’ time. Writing for The Telegraph, Law said,

“It seemed for so long that Tottenham would never spend £100m on a player, but they did just that by signing Sandro Tonali from Newcastle United. That was a huge statement of intent and demonstrated big backing for De Zerbi. Tottenham’s signings look to have been made to improve results immediately, rather than with an eye on the future, and they will be expected to hit the ground running, given Tonali, Jan Paul van Hecke, Mateus Fernandes and Marcos Senesi all boast plenty of Premier League experience.”

Tottenham’s hierarchy have not shied away from backing Roberto de Zerbi this summer. Unlike previous transfer windows, where the Lilywhites signed players for the future, the club has prioritised bringing in profiles that could make an immediate impact at N17 in the coming months. The North Londoners have shown immense ambition, and the fans will be expecting all six signings to hit the ground running under Roberto de Zerbi, given their wealth of Premier League experience.

Spurs are not quite done with their transfer business yet. The club is strongly targeting a move for Manchester City’s Savinho as the Lilywhites aim to bring in attacking reinforcements before deadline day. The Brazilian is also keen on making a move to N17 and has already handed in a transfer request to Enzo Maresca. It could only be a matter of time before we see the 22-year-old don the Tottenham jersey under Roberto de Zerbi.
