Tottenham are doing everything they can to back Roberto De Zerbi in this summer’s transfer window.
Tottenham have done well to bring in reinforcements this summer ahead of the upcoming campaign. The Lilywhites have not shied away from taking action and have embarked on a major summer spending spree in recent months. They signed the likes of Marcos Senesi, Andy Robertson, and Jan Paul van Hecke to fix a leaky defence that had been conceding too many chances and goals. Not only that, but the North Londoners also spent a significant portion of their budget on Mateus Fernandes and Sandro Tonali.
Not many fans expected Spurs to show so much ambition heading into the summer break at the end of last season. They barely escaped relegation and were fortunate to see West Ham United take their place in 18th spot on the final day of the season. So, it was understandable why the Lilywhites might have been expected to avoid spending huge sums on new players, considering that the club had just finished 17th for a second consecutive campaign.
But, to their credit, the North Londoners did manage to outspend every other Premier League club during the first half of the transfer window as they aimed to strengthen their defence and midfield. They also breached the £100m mark for the first time in the club’s history after signing Sandro Tonali from Newcastle United on a long-term deal, while spending approximately £85m on Mateus Fernandes just a few days earlier.
Tottenham hiding their weaknesses by splashing the cash this summer?
Tottenham have done well to bring in new players who could immediately hit the ground running under Roberto de Zerbi at N17. The focus is now shifting towards bolstering the attack during the business end of the transfer window. Recent reports have suggested that the Lilywhites are on the verge of completing a double deal worth £150m for Manchester City pair Omar Marmoush and Savinho in the coming days. Their arrivals would mean that the North Londoners have spent almost £400m on new signings in the last two months.
However, Martin Lipton has slammed Spurs for splashing the cash recklessly and overpaying for new players this summer. Speaking on the Last Word on Spurs podcast, Lipton said,
“When you’ve finished 17th two years running, you actually have to overpay for people, overpay in wages, overpay in transfer fees if you want to get players you want. That’s the side effect and the repercussions of Spurs being absolutely garbage for two seasons.”
Spurs paid almost £50m for Jan Paul van Hecke earlier this summer, despite the Dutchman having only a year left on his Brighton contract. Not only that, but the Lilywhites also spent £85m on Mateus Fernandes, a player who had been relegated for two consecutive seasons with different teams. Sandro Tonali has also cost the club £100m, making it clear that the North Londoners have paid a premium for the Italy international. And now, to top it all off, Spurs are on the verge of spending an additional £150m on Savinho and Omar Marmoush, two players who have struggled to make their mark in the Premier League.
So, it is understandable why Martin Lipton is suggesting that Spurs are overpaying for players this summer. There is a clear sense of desperation in the club’s approach as they try to avoid another bottom-half finish in the Premier League. Not only that, but the Lilywhites are determined to back Roberto de Zerbi in the transfer market, which could come back to haunt them in the coming months if the Italian tactician falters during the crucial stages of the season.
