Chris Hughton reveals what makes Roberto De Zerbi special

Spurs icon Chris Hughton explains why Roberto De Zerbi stands out from other modern managers after mastering both attacking identity and Premier League points.

Style without substance gets managers sacked in England. Fans in N17 have watched too many bosses promise expansive football only to abandon their ideals once pressure mounted. Finding a tactician who attacks fearlessly and consistently picks up three points is rare. That is why Roberto De Zerbi brings real excitement.

Former Tottenham defender Chris Hughton understands that balance better than most. He laid the foundation at Brighton before watching the Italian take the south coast club into Europe. He knows how hard it is to drill an attractive brand of football into a squad while meeting weekly expectations.

Speaking during a recent visit to Hotspur Way, Hughton gave an honest assessment of what makes the new boss tick. Plenty of coaches preach possession, but very few create teams that can outplay top sides and climb the table at the same time.

“Yes, really got them playing,” Hughton told the official club website when asked about the manager’s reputation.“I think there are two things. There’s a way of playing and then there’s results.” It sounds straightforward, yet few pull it off.

The former Republic of Ireland international made it clear that winning matches must always take priority over stubborn ideology. Pleasing the crowd matters, but the boardroom only cares about European qualification. De Zerbi showed down south that he could deliver on both fronts.

“Ultimately, results are always the most important thing, but he was able to do both,” Hughton explained. “You know, build the team the way that he wanted to, in a way of playing, a style of playing, that ultimately got him the results to finish where they finished in the league.”

That dual ability is why the North Londoners made their move. If the Italian can replicate that south coast magic at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, the Lilywhites will finally have an identity that looks great on the eye and delivers genuine success on the pitch.
