Darren Bent hails Tottenham’s transfer business after an impressive summer under Roberto De Zerbi

Tottenham are hoping to start the season on a positive note under Roberto De Zerbi.

Tottenham have done well to back Roberto De Zerbi this summer following a dismal campaign last season. The Lilywhites narrowly avoided relegation after finishing just one place above the drop zone. Thanks to De Zerbi’s timely arrival, the North Londoners regained some self-belief, with the players starting to fight for the badge even when things were not going their way. As a result, the Lewis family made it a priority to back the Italian tactician in the market as they looked to kickstart a new era at N17.

Spurs have shown immense ambition and intent in the transfer market. They managed to fend off competition to land most of their targets, investing heavily in players who could make an immediate impact on the pitch. The Lilywhites brought in the likes of Marcos Senesi, Jan Paul van Hecke, and Andy Robertson to fix a leaky defence, adding some much-needed experience and quality at the back after losing Cristian Romero.

On the other hand, the North Londoners also managed to break their transfer record twice, first by signing Mateus Fernandes and then by landing Sandro Tonali for significant fees. As a result, Spurs also ended up outspending all the other Premier League clubs during the first half of the transfer window in July. The club is now focusing on bolstering their attack before the transfer window shuts in a few days.

Tottenham have done well to back Roberto De Zerbi

Not many fans expected Tottenham to splash the cash on top-quality players this summer after the club finished 17th in the Premier League last season. But, credit to the Lilywhites, they have shown immense ambition to lure their transfer targets to N17 as they looked to back Roberto de Zerbi in the market. The Italian tactician has ensured that the North Londoners have undergone a major squad overhaul before the new season begins this weekend.

Darren Bent has now praised Spurs for their transfer business, claiming that the new signings could prove to be difference-makers under De Zerbi this season. Speaking on talkSPORT, Bent said,

“Spurs will finish top eight. I mean they have recruited very well. I know you talk about some of the price tags for Tonali and Fernandes, but at the end of the day, they’ve brought in good players. I know they’ve paid a premium for them, but they are good players. Fourth from bottom for Spurs was poor, but they’ve brought in Tonali, Mateus Fernandes, Van Hecke, Senesi, and Robertson. All terrific players. So yeah, I think Spurs will make the biggest difference this season.”

It is fair to suggest that Spurs have overpaid for some of their targets this summer. However, they have also secured players who could instantly hit the ground running at N17 under Roberto de Zerbi. There are signs of optimism in and around the club, with Darren Bent claiming that the new arrivals could immediately prove to be difference-makers for the North Londoners in the coming months. The Lilywhites have addressed most of the glaring issues in the squad and now have a strong chance of finishing in the top half of the Premier League table.

It is important to note that Spurs have solid squad depth and are only playing one game a week after failing to qualify for European competitions this season. This could prove to be a blessing in disguise for Roberto de Zerbi, giving the Italian tactician some much-needed time to bring the best out of his players and ensure that the Lilywhites can go toe-to-toe with their rivals in the coming months.
