Tottenham’s new captain misses out as Roberto De Zerbi gives team news ahead of Brentford game

Tottenham are gearing up for their first game of the 2026/27 season at Brentford.

The 2026/27 Premier League season is not too far away from kicking off, with Tottenham Hotspur’s first assignment coming against Brentford at the Gtech Stadium on Saturday evening.

Roberto De Zerbi and Co. will be hoping to begin their new campaign with a win as they look to avoid the disaster of last season, where they were embroiled in a relegation dogfight. Spurs had a fruitful pre-season campaign, going unbeaten and showing plenty of encouraging signs. The North Londoners rounded up their pre-season with back-to-back friendlies against Hoffenheim last week.

The 47-year-old tactician will now be hoping that Tottenham’s preparations so far will be enough for a strong campaign.

Roberto De Zerbi provides Tottenham team news ahead of Brentford trip

Coming into the season opener against Brentford, Spurs have a few injuries to deal with. Dejan Kulusevski, Mohammed Kudus, Wilson Odobert, and Xavi Simons are all sidelined. Dominic Solanke missed the last few friendlies with ankle pain and was deemed a doubt, but has since returned to training.

The Tottenham head coach has now delivered an injury update on his squad ahead of Saturday’s game, which also sees the club’s new captain miss out.

“Micky is not on the list tomorrow like Pedro Porro,” De Zerbi said in his pre-match press conference (h/t Football London).

“James Maddison is, Solanke, Udogie, Fernandes also. Sarr not because he felt some pain, but nothing big.”

On van de Ven’s fitness, De Zerbi continued: “Today he worked with us, with the group and he is going very well.

“He suffered a problem during the pre-season of Australia, I don’t know if it was the flight, but not a big problem.”

Tough assignment vs. Brentford

Tottenham are up against Brentford away on the opening weekend of the season, and it will be no walk in the park. The Bees have a strong matchday one record, having only lost once in their last five opening matches since achieving promotion to the top flight.

At the Gtech Community Stadium, they are a different beast and will test Spurs in every way. Even without some key players, De Zerbi’s side will have to do their job. There are no excuses, and he has had a full pre-season complemented by substantial backing from the board in the transfer market.

The players have to rise to the occasion and prove their mettle, knowing it is going to be an extremely physical battle throughout the 90 minutes. Hopefully, our fans return home from the Gtech Community Stadium buzzing.
