Roberto De Zerbi pinpoints ‘one’ key area Tottenham will have to improve in after 3-0 Brentford hammering

Tottenham were given a reality check by Brentford on the opening weekend of the 2026/27 campaign.

Tottenham Hotspur produced a shockingly disjointed performance in a 3-0 defeat to Brentford on the opening weekend of the 2026/27 Premier League season.

Despite an unbeaten pre-season campaign and boasting shiny £100m record signing Sandro Tonali in midfield, Roberto De Zerbi’s side were outclassed in every facet by Brentford, who were three goals to the good before the hour mark. Keane Lewis-Potter had the hosts ahead inside 12 minutes, with Vitaly Janelt doubling their lead by half-time.

De Zerbi threw on Mateus Fernandes and Rodrigo Bentancur to start the second-half, but they did little to turn the tide. Instead, Tottenham were 3-0 down in the 48th-minute, with Michael Kayode hooking the ball into the roof of the net from close range. The visitors looked clueless, failing to come up with any solutions to the hosts’ physicality, aggression, drive and pressing. And it could have been 4-0 had Igor Thiago not missed a penalty after Kevin Schade was fouled by Bentancur in the box.

Following an emotionally taxing relegation survival battle at the end of last term, Tottenham were eager to demonstrate immediate progress under De Zerbi. However, instead, their familiar vulnerabilities got exposed by the Bees across the pitch.

De Zerbi was regularly left looking like he had no answers. The Italian was an animated figure throughout the evening, either barking instructions to his players or sharing his frustrations with the coaching staff on the bench. Yet, he could not inspire his boys to get anything positive out of the game.

When asked to decode how the game went, the Tottenham boss said in an interview to Sky Sports (h/t BBC Sport).

“We suffered physically, but we knew that before the game. We were not ready to fight the duels. We made a lot of mistakes in the timing of the pressure with Mikey Moore. We arrived too many times late, and we lost too many duels to compete with Brentford.

“I am sorry for the defeat. I know we have to improve in our physical condition, in the organisation. There were many new players, but it was the first game. It’s part of our journey.

“With a lot of new players, we knew we needed soul and style of play to become a team. Today I think there was the soul, but we didn’t fight in the right way.”

Tottenham were second best in every department

This was supposed to be the start of a new era for Spurs after back-to-back 17th-placed finishes. Instead, it turned out to be a tale of new faces, but same old failings.

At times, it was far too easy for Brentford. In reality, Keith Andrews’ side never got their motor into second gear and without that, they mauled the Lilywhites. It could have easily been an even more embarrassing scoreline for the visitors, with Thiago’s penalty hitting the post and going out. The hosts were everything Tottenham were not- well organised, tenacious, committed, physical and full of intent right from the outset.

The game demonstrates that De Zerbi has glaring gaps in his squad, and only signing new players won’t fix those. The individual and collective effort of the team must drastically improve to avoid anything close to last campaign.
