Tottenham have received a fresh update on James Maddison’s injury.

Tottenham Hotspur are set to face Charlton Athletic in the second round of the EFL Cup on Wednesday evening. This gives them an immediate opportunity to bounce back from the utterly disappointing opening-weekend defeat to Brentford at the Gtech Community Stadium.

Roberto De Zerbi stated in his press conference on Tuesday that defensive duo Micky van de Ven and Pedro Porro will be on the bench vs. Charlton Athletic after missing the first game due to lack of fitness. The Spurs boss also confirmed a new injury setback suffered by James Maddison, ruling him out of the cup fixture.

James Maddison had limited involvement during pre-season, with Roberto De Zerbi eager not to rush his comeback after he missed most of last season following surgery on a ruptured ACL sustained in the summer during a friendly against Newcastle United. However, he was fit enough to be included in the squad against Brentford in West London, where the creative midfielder managed 22 minutes after replacing Mikey Moore.

And the England international was crocked yet again in the defeat to Brentford. He fell awkwardly on his shoulder during that cameo and underwent assessment, with the Tottenham boss describing the problem as “minor”. However, a new update on Maddison’s injury has emerged now.

James Maddison suffers slight shoulder fracture

According to David Ornstein of The Athletic, Maddison has fractured his shoulder and is set to be out for up to two weeks. A subsequent MRI scan has shown a slight break.

The playmaker trained on Monday and, though the scans showed a fracture, there is optimism that the issue is not serious and he could be back soon. Given the English midfielder’s injury problems over the last couple of years, this shoulder problem has understandably created concern. However, the latest prognosis suggests De Zerbi should not be without one of his most creative and key players for long.

The player has already been able to do some training at the start of the week, which should provide further optimism to everyone associated with Tottenham that this will be a short-term absence rather than another major blow. Maddison recovered from an ACL injury and finally returned to action in May. He went on to make three appearances to help Tottenham avoid relegation on the final day of last season.

An expected two-week layoff should see the Coventry-born star miss the games against Charlton and Newcastle United. He will be touch-and-go for the trip to Nottingham Forest on September 5.
