Tottenham are keen on going all the way in one of the domestic competitions this season under Roberto De Zerbi.

Tottenham managed to progress to the 3rd Round of the Carabao Cup after beating Charlton Athletic comprehensively at home on Wednesday night. The Lilywhites came out with all guns blazing and managed to deliver a five-star performance. It was a solid display that showcased the true potential of the North Londoners under Roberto De Zerbi. The 5-1 victory also meant that the club registered its first win of the new season in spectacular fashion.

Spurs had five different goal-scorers in their clash against Charlton as they claimed a convincing one-sided victory. Talented youngster Mikey Moore opened the scoring for the Lilywhites with a wonderful left-footed strike after cutting in from the right flank. Dominic Solanke followed suit shortly before half-time, scoring his first goal of the season from close range. The tie looked to be all but over as the North Londoners entered the break with a convincing 2-0 lead.

However, that did not stop Roberto de Zerbi’s men, as they were intent on putting on a show for their fans at N17. Kevin Danso made it 3-0 with his first touch of the game after coming on as a substitute. It was a thumping header that was destined to find the bottom-left corner. The Spurs faithful were also treated to Savio’s instant impact on his debut for the North London club. The Brazilian came on as a late substitute and capped off his performance with a wonderful goal and assist right at the end.

Tottenham face a challenging test in the 3rd Round of the Carabao Cup

An impressive 5-1 victory at home against Charlton Athletic meant that Spurs progressed through to the third round of the Carabao Cup. The Lilywhites last won this competition in 2008, when they beat Chelsea in the final at Wembley Stadium. Since then, the North Londoners have come close on several occasions to clinching domestic silverware. Last year, Thomas Frank’s Spurs team was knocked out by Newcastle United in the 3rd Round of the competition following a 2-0 defeat at St. James’ Park.

The Spurs faithful will be optimistic that their side can progress through to the latter stages of the tournament this time around under Roberto de Zerbi. The draw for the next round of the Carabao Cup took place immediately after the Lilywhites thumped Charlton Athletic at home on Wednesday night. It has now been confirmed that the North Londoners are all set to face Liverpool away at Anfield in the 3rd Round of the competition.

It is going to be a challenging fixture for Spurs, who do not boast a good record away from home against Liverpool in all competitions. When asked to share his thoughts on the draw during his post-match press conference (via Football London), De Zerbi said,

“Great. It’s a great game. If we want to win the competition, we want to win the games and sometimes in this competition it can happen to play already in the beginning against the big, big teams. It’s a great challenge for the players, for me, for the club and we have to arrive in that game ready to play in our style and ready to play in our personality.”

Are Tottenham ready for the Anfield test?

Tottenham are all set to take on a new-look Liverpool side that is still finding its feet under Andoni Iraola. The Reds started the campaign with a 2-2 draw against Newcastle United at St. James’ Park. It is fair to say that the players are still trying to adapt to Iraola’s playing style and tactical demands. So, unlike in recent years, the Lilywhites might have a chance to come out on top against the Merseyside club in the 3rd Round of the Carabao Cup.

It is important to note that Spurs have not won any of their last 18 matches in all competitions away from home against Liverpool, with their last victory coming all the way back in 2011. Therefore, Roberto de Zerbi has a mighty task on his hands as he looks to break the curse and progress through to the next round of the Carabao Cup. It seems like this could be the best chance the Lilywhites have had of beating the Reds at Anfield.
