Tottenham have been handed a boost following the return of key player to first-team training from injury.
Tottenham Hotspur have come into the new season with a familiar problem. Lots of injury problems for head coach Roberto De Zerbi to navigate.
James Maddison’s torrid luck with injuries continued last weekend when he landed awkwardly and suffered a slight fracture on his shoulder against Brentford. The midfielder is set to be out for a couple of weeks, while the likes of Xavi Simons and Wilson Odobert are long-term casualties.
Mohammed Kudus has also been missing for the Lilywhites since January. The Ghanaian, signed from West Ham in 2025, suffered a tricky quad problem against Sunderland in January and has not played for the club since. The playmaker had been in line for a return to action in April when Roberto De Zerbi took charge, but despite re-joining team training, he suffered a setback and was ruled out for the rest of the season.
Mohammed Kudus returns to first-team training
At the start of August, Mohammed Kudus and Dejan Kulusevski stepped up their rehabilitation as they took to the grass at the Enfield training base. It was a sign of progress that the creative midfielders are gradually inching closer to fitness after missing a lot of action.
Now, according to club insider Szyexcl on X, Kudus trained with the team on Thursday. New signing Omar Marmoush also trained for the first time with his new teammates.
Following months of intensive rehabilitation, Kudus’ seamless reintegration into full training sessions indicates that he has passed all physical and medical protocols required for high-intensity competition. De Zerbi revealed in late July that the Ghanaian international is “almost ready”, although the Spurs boss reiterated he will not rush the player.
The decision to undergo surgery in May has delayed his Tottenham return, but De Zerbi will hope to have the 26-year-old at his disposal in the near future. Having Kudus back in the team will feel like a new signing and boost Spurs’ options in attack. He would offer significant tactical flexibility to Tottenham’s offensive setup.
There is optimism at Hotspur Way that the African star could be available before the three-week international window, which commences after Spurs’ Premier League fixture against Aston Villa on Saturday 19th September. Having missed significant competitive action since January, Kudus is likely to be eased back into the fold.
A fully fit Kudus, whenever he arrives, effectively represents one of the best signings the North London club could make this summer without spending a single penny. It remains to be seen whether De Zerbi decides to include the left-footed attacker in his squad against Newcastle United on Saturday evening.
