Kevin Danso reflects on his first Tottenham goal scored vs. Charlton

Kevin Danso was one of the goalscorers in Tottenham’s 5-1 thrashing of Charlton Athletic.

Tottenham Hotspur players will be feeling better about themselves heading into the weekend’s Newcastle United game after beating Charlton Athletic 5-1 in the Carabao Cup second round.

Spurs got battered and bruised in their season-opener at Brentford. The 3-0 scoreline flattered Roberto De Zerbi’s side last weekend. The Tottenham boss wanted a big response from his boys in midweek in the Carabao Cup, and his boys delivered. New signing Savio stole the show after coming off the bench, scoring and assisting a goal apiece.

Kevin Danso opens up on scoring his first Tottenham goal

Kevin Danso also made his first appearance of the season in midweek. He was an unused substitute in the defeat to Brentford but came off the bench in the 5-1 win over Charlton Athletic. And the Austrian international scored his first-ever Tottenham goal with his first touch. It was a brave, angled header from Mateus Fernandes’ pinpoint cross into the box from the right, although the goal came at some personal cost to the defender.

Immediately after scoring, Kevin Danso held his head and asked for help from the bench. The 27-year-old clashed heads with a Charlton player while angling his header past their goalkeeper, leading to a cut on his forehead.

The centre-back got stitched up on the pitch before he was good to go again. Danso has now opened up on what it means to score his first Spurs goal.

“Yeah, came on as a sub… managed to score with my first touch, that doesn’t happen too often, hasn’t happened in my career before, and it’s my first Spurs goal, so extremely happy about that. I was very annoyed,” Danso told the club’s official website.

“I don’t know if you saw, but I wasn’t able to celebrate my goal properly with the fans, because I knew straight away when I got the whack on my head that it was pretty painful. But I think to score your first Spurs goal is definitely something special. It was a great feeling.”

Danso’s role will be important this season

In a summer that has witnessed an expensive squad rebuild in north London, De Zerbi has kept his faith in Danso. For a club that employs the expensive Dutch duo in Micky van de Ven and Jan Paul van Hecke, as well as able veterans in Marcos Senesi and Ben Davies, Danso is expected to have a limited role this season.

The Austrian finds himself behind Van de Ven, Van Hecke and Senesi in the centre-back pecking order. However, given Tottenham’s injury problems, he will get opportunities to play. Danso played 25 minutes against Charlton, and within two minutes he was on the score sheet. For now, we expect the former Southampton man to be limited to cup competitions.
