Reports: Cody Gakpo gives verbal assurance to Roberto De Zerbi over Tottenham Hotspur transfer

Cody Gakpo has reportedly given Tottenham a major boost by expressing his willingness to join Roberto De Zerbi’s side.

Tottenham Hotspur’s pursuit of Liverpool forward Cody Gakpo has taken a major step forward as the transfer deadline draws near. According to transfer update reporter Ben Jacobs, shared by Gary Ward on X, the Dutch international attacker has provided direct verbal assurances to Tottenham head coach Roberto De Zerbi and Spurs management regarding his eagerness to complete a move to North London.

The breakthrough in player-side communications centers on Gakpo’s explicit willingness to join De Zerbi’s project, provided Tottenham and Liverpool can reach an official agreement on a transfer fee. Outlining the current standing of negotiations, Jacobs revealed:

“Gakpo has kind of given a verbal assurance to De Zerbi and Spurs. If you agree a deal with Liverpool, then I’ll be a Tottenham Hotspur player.”

Gakpo’s assurance effectively eliminates personal terms as a stumbling block for Tottenham. The 27-year-old forward is understood to be highly impressed by De Zerbi’s tactical system and attacking setup, viewing Tottenham as an ideal environment to command a leading role across the frontline.

With player approval secured, the focus shifts entirely to structured negotiations between Tottenham and Liverpool executives. Liverpool head coach Andoni Iraola recently refused to rule out a potential departure for Gakpo before the window shuts, acknowledging that ongoing market movements and incoming additions at Anfield leave squad dynamics fluid.

Spurs Technical Director Johan Lange and Chief Executive Vinai Venkatesham are now working to present a financial package that satisfies Liverpool’s valuation. Given Gakpo’s proven Premier League versatility, operating with equal authority as a central striker or inverted left winger, Spurs view his arrival as a transformational addition to their attacking rotation.

Gakpo’s potential signing directly matches De Zerbi’s recent public statements targeting “one player more in one specific position” following executive strategy meetings with club leadership. Having already integrated marquee summer signings such as Omar Marmoush and Sávio, adding Gakpo would finalize one of the most ambitious transfer windows in Tottenham’s history.

However, with Spurs currently holding 19 non-homegrown players against the Premier League’s 17-player registration limit, executive leadership must simultaneously conclude outgoing deals. Active discussions regarding potential departures for Kota Takai, Pape Matar Sarr, or Richarlison remain vital as Tottenham aim to clear registration slots and secure Gakpo before the transfer window closes.
