Tottenham want to bring in another attacker before next week’s transfer deadline.
Ahead of Tottenham Hotspur’s first home game of the new Premier League season against Newcastle United, head coach Roberto De Zerbi has expressed his delight at securing the impressive signings of Savio and Omar Marmoush from Manchester City.
Spurs secured Savio’s signature in an £85 million package, while Marmoush arrived on a season-long loan with an obligation to buy that could rise to £60m. Despite overseeing a massive spending spree this summer, the Italian remains extremely hopeful that the club can finalise one more crucial deal before the September 1 transfer deadline.
This shows that the board are still actively looking to strengthen the squad further. Indeed, the chastening 3-0 defeat to Brentford last weekend showcased just how light the Lilywhites are in the forward department, with there still a feeling that Richarlison could leave before the window slams shut.
Tottenham interested in Bundesliga striker
According to Italian newspaper La Gazzetta dello Sport, Tottenham are battling Manchester United and Fiorentina for the signing of Freiburg striker Igor Matanovic.
Igor Matanovic moved to Freiburg in an €8million deal from Eintracht Frankfurt in the summer of 2025 and went onto score 15 goals in all competitions. The big centre-forward was a key part of the Freiburg side that had reached the Europa League final, only to lose 1-0 to Aston Villa. The 23-year-old was called up to the World Cup earlier this summer, where he made three appearances for Croatia.
Matanovic has started the new campaign well, scoring twice and assisting once in the 5-1 win over Dusseldorf in the first round of the DFB-Pokal. The report adds that the 6ft 5ins Croatian striker’s performances over the last 12 months has caught the attention of several clubs across Europe. Fiorentina view him as a potential replacement for Moise Kean, but they face competition from Spurs and Man United.
Matanovic would provide a different dimension to Tottenham’s attack
Matanovic showed in the Bundesliga last season just how much of a handful he can be for the defenders. With his towering frame, the Croat can occupy two defenders that frees up spaces for runners to exploit. He can hold the ball up well, is aerially excellent and can finish off chances.
Marmoush appears to be an upgrade on Richarlison, yet if De Zerbi also wants to sign a traditional No.9, Matanovic could well be that man. The former Frankfurt striker would provide a different dimension in attack than Marmoush, whilst being a handy option to bring off the bench. Due to his gigantic frame, the Hamburg-born talent will be an asset to have in both boxes.
With Fiorentina and Man United also vying for Matanovic’s signature, Spurs must hurry up.
