‘They are too strong’: De Zerbi asks for patience as Tottenham work to build soul and chemistry

Roberto De Zerbi backs Tottenham’s squad to succeed, insisting the new-look side simply needs time to find its rhythm.

Tottenham Hotspur head coach Roberto De Zerbi has urged calm following his side’s 2-0 loss to Newcastle United, insisting that the newly overhauled squad will eventually go on winning runs once tactical connections take hold.

Despite back-to-back league defeats to open the Premier League campaign, De Zerbi emphasized his unshakeable trust in the talent brought into the club over the transfer window. Facing a rebuild following last season’s struggle near the bottom of the table, the Italian manager stressed that quality alone will ultimately yield positive results.

Addressing the long-term project in North London, De Zerbi said (h/t Hotspur Lane on X):

“I have no doubt about the players, the quality of the players. I have no doubt about the final result. I think we are building a very strong, a very important team… Now the club decided to rebuild the squad, and they made a great job, great players. I have no doubt, because I have too big confidence in the new players, in the players who stayed last season. Maybe we need time, maybe. At the end, these players, they will win games in a row because they are too strong, too good players.”

Finding Connection Takes Time

While Spurs dominated phases of ball possession during Saturday’s clash, confidence dipped after Anthony Elanga opened the scoring for the visitors. De Zerbi acknowledged that individual talent must be backed by tactical harmony, structural understanding, and collective belief.

Highlighting the necessary steps ahead, De Zerbi explained:

“The most important thing is to not lose the energy, to not lose the confidence, because in football, it’s not enough the transfer market, it’s not enough the names on the pitch. We have to find connection, we have to find the soul, we have to find the style of play, the style of defensive space – and to find these things, we need time, more time.”

With Tottenham preparing to visit Nottingham Forest next weekend, De Zerbi’s immediate priority will be restoring confidence and converting tactical progress into points. The manager remains firm that once the squad syncs, Tottenham will establish the winning consistency required to climb up the Premier League standings.
