2023 Tottenham interim manager believes Omar Marmoush is the ‘perfect fit’ for Spurs under De Zerbi this season

Omar Marmoush is hoping to reignite his career at Tottenham after a high-profile move earlier last week.

Tottenham fans finally got to see Omar Marmoush make his debut for the club against Newcastle United this weekend. The Lilywhites came out on the losing side against the Magpies, but it was a very encouraging performance from the Egypt international. He started the game as an out-and-out striker, replacing Dominic Solanke in the starting eleven. And it is fair to say that the 27-year-old managed to show glimpses of his true quality for the North Londoners despite the disappointing result.

Marmoush has joined the club on an initial loan deal from Manchester City, with Spurs having an obligation to buy the player on a permanent basis next summer. And it is fair to say that the prolific attacker could cause a lot of havoc for the Lilywhites if Roberto de Zerbi utilises him correctly in the coming months. The 27-year-old will still need some time to get back to his best as he is in desperate need of regular minutes under his belt.

The new Spurs signing did not have the best of times at Manchester City during his stay at the Etihad Stadium. He was playing second fiddle to Erling Haaland and failed to feature regularly in the starting eleven. Marmoush fell further down the pecking order after the Cityzens signed Antoine Semenyo from AFC Bournemouth midway through last season, prompting the Egypt international to start looking for other options instead.

Omar Marmoush could be worth the buck at Tottenham under Roberto de Zerbi

In a game that provided very little for Tottenham’s forwards, Omar Marmoush certainly managed to make his mark against Newcastle United on Saturday. The Egypt international looked keen to create a lasting first impression and was determined to showcase his quality for the Lilywhites from the very first whistle. The 27-year-old did enough to convince De Zerbi that he should maintain his place in the starting eleven the following week.

Omar Marmoush posed a genuine threat in front of goal and had a very good chance of scoring on his debut from a corner in the second half against Newcastle United. Instead, the prolific striker’s volley hit the side-netting from close range. However, stats (via Tottenham Muse) show how much impact the Egypt international made during his time on the pitch. He managed to create two chances, had six ball carries, won six of the nine ground duels he attempted, and completed three key passes.

Taking note of that performance, Ryan Mason has now claimed that Marmoush would be an instant success at N17 under Roberto de Zerbi’s guidance this season. Speaking on Sky Sports (via X), Mason said,

“I love it. I think he’s perfect for the way the manager wants to play at Spurs. I think he’s very intelligent as a footballer. He fits to the philosophy the manager has. I think it fits the club as well and it fits what the fans want.”

A matter of time before Omar Marmoush proves his worth

There is no doubt that Omar Marmoush can hit the ground running for the North Londoners this season. As per Stats Perform (via We Are Tottenham), the prolific striker ranks 5th among Premier League forwards for open-play goals per 90 over the last two seasons. He has 0.48 open-play goals per 90, with a minimum of 1,500 minutes played in the league. Only Erling Haaland, Benjamin Sesko, Alexander Isak, and Luis Diaz rank higher.

Roberto de Zerbi needs to keep playing Omar Marmoush in the upcoming matches. The 27-year-old thrives either as an inverted left-winger or as a sole #9. He likes to run into channels and take on defenders with his explosive pace. The Egypt international is also quick in transitions and tends to press off the ball. So, finding the right role for the talented forward is something that De Zerbi needs to figure out quickly in the coming months.
