Tottenham revive interest in highly-rated Benfica attacker after failed Cody Gakpo pursuit

Tottenham are planning to make an attempt to sign highly-rated Benfica attacker.

We have reached the final phase of the summer transfer window, and Tottenham Hotspur are still working behind the scenes to strengthen the squad further.

Roberto De Zerbi has overseen an expensive summer rebuild. Savio and Omar Marmoush both swapped Manchester City for Spurs last week, bolstering a squad that struggled royally for creativity, flair and goals last season. Dejan Kulusevski, Wilson Odobert and Xavi Simons all remain on the sidelines, but Mohammed Kudus’ return from a long-term quad injury in the 2-0 defeat to Newcastle United on Saturday has boosted De Zerbi’s options further.

Spurs have been interested in Liverpool star Cody Gakpo as well. However, Gakpo’s decision against joining the North London club has led to the club officials shifting their focus elsewhere. And it looks like they have revived their interest in a talented winger

Tottenham line up Benfica talent as Cody Gakpo alternative

According to a report from Norwegian outlet Sporten, Tottenham have revived their interest in Benfica winger Andreas Schjelderup. He has now been identified as Gakpo’s alternative.

Spurs have been one of the clubs interested in signing Andreas Schjelderup this summer after his impressive form for Benfica and Norway during the summer’s World Cup. His performances at the world’s biggest stage have caught their attention, but a move has proven difficult to complete.

Benfica manager Marco Silva does not want to lose the 22-year-old and has insisted that the winger is an important part of his plans at the club. That stance has made it difficult for Spurs to bring the Norwegian international to North London. However, even if the Eagles remain firm on their stance, the Tottenham chiefs are prepared to renew their efforts to sign him.

If Schjelderup continues performing at this level, his value is likely to rise further. The speedy winger’s displays at the World Cup have already strengthened his reputation, while his ability to trouble defenders with directness, pace and dribbling skills makes him an attractive option for a club like Tottenham seeking a dynamic winger.

The Lilywhites remain committed to bringing in high-grade attacking quality before the window closes, and a talent like Schjelderup fits the bill perfectly. At this stage, a move looks extremely unlikely, but Spurs must at least test Benfica’s resolve for their rising star.
