Tottenham have made checks on Lyon winger ahead of the transfer deadline day.
Tottenham Hotspur boss Roberto De Zerbi has been left disappointed by the news that Liverpool star Cody Gakpo has chosen to join Manchester City. Spurs had been preparing to spend big on Gakpo, but his decision to snub them has forced the N17 officials to step up work on alternative attacking targets.
The Lilywhites are in advanced talks to sign Iliman Ndiaye from Everton, with Richarlison set to move in the opposite direction as part of separate negotiations. Everton are open to selling Ndiaye after he rejected multiple contract offers and held talks with Saudi club Al-Hilal earlier this summer. The Toffees have agreed terms in principle to sign Richarlison after he told Roberto De Zerbi that he wants to leave White Hart Lane.
In addition, Tottenham are also keeping tabs on other attackers after losing their opening two league games of the 2026/27 season.
Tottenham enquire about Lyon winger
According to a report from TEAMtalk, Tottenham have made an enquiry about Lyon winger Malick Fofana. The youngster has attracted significant interest in recent days, with Sunderland and newly-promoted Hull City both holding talks over the attacker.
Following their failure to qualify for the UEFA Champions League last week, Lyon are now in a position where they are forced to sell. Malick Fofana is one of the sellable assets at the Groupama Stadium. He has reportedly rejected the chance to join Hull City. This is because the Belgian international has set his sights on joining a ‘bigger’ club.
Tottenham certainly is a bigger club than Hull City, backed by an exciting project under De Zerbi, even though the start to the new season hasn’t been promising. A player in the ilk of Fofana has tormented defences in Ligue 1 in the last few years thanks to his explosive pace, elusive movement, unpredictability and goalscoring ability. He maximises his pace and dribbling skills to drive through tight spaces and create opportunities in the final third.
Now with Savio and Omar Marmoush on the books, and Ndiaye set to join the pair in the capital, De Zerbi has crucial options out on the flanks. The Italian wants his wide players to remain high, hug the touchline or cut inside, which Savio and Ndiaye do so well. With Mohammed Kudus back fit, and Mathys Tel also an option, this begs the question of whether Spurs need to sign another wide player in Fofana?
Not really. Adding Fofana to the squad would be a luxury, as De Zerbi has now got options to compete in the first XI. Instead of going for another winger after the potential acquisition of Ndiaye, the North Londoners must try to bring cover for right-back Pedro Porro.
