Tottenham are working on a potential replacement for Kevin Danso.

Tottenham Hotspur’s disappointing start to the 2026/27 campaign continued on Saturday evening as they fell to defeat against Newcastle United.

After nearly suffering relegation last campaign, Spurs have spent big this summer to turn their fortunes around under head coach Roberto De Zerbi. However, despite their summer splurge, they have opened up the campaign with back-to-back defeats and lie rock-bottom in the table.

Following the 2-0 home loss to Newcastle United, Roberto De Zerbi revealed that three players have asked to leave the club before the transfer window slams shut. One of those is Kevin Danso, who was left out of the Spurs squad at the weekend.

The 27-year-old has dropped down the defensive pecking order following the arrivals of Marcos Senesi and Jan Paul van Hecke earlier this transfer window. Add that to Micky van de Ven penning a lucrative contract, the Austrian international’s chances of getting regular minutes appear limited. Thus, he wants out of Tottenham.

Tottenham working on shock deal for Chelsea defender

Recent reports suggested that Sunderland had a season-long loan proposal for Kevin Danso turned down by Tottenham. However, the Black Cats are pushing to sign Danso, and the player is open to the move.

Now, according to reputed journalist Fabrizio Romano on X, Tottenham are working on a deal to sign Tosin Adarabioyo from Chelsea. The Blues are open to the player’s exit and talks over his departure are underway. The Nigerian international’s move could depend on Danso leaving Spurs, meaning further movement may be required before negotiations with Chelsea can accelerate.

Tottenham rejecting a loan proposal for Danso would mean that they prefer a permanent exit. De Zerbi and the Hotspur Way chiefs have identified Tosin Adarabioyo as the Austrian’s potential replacement, with the 28-year-old not a part of Xabi Alonso’s project at Stamford Bridge. The centre-back has not featured in Chelsea’s opening two games as he has been told to find a new club.

Losing Danso would be a setback, given his reliability and committed approach since arriving at the club last year. However, his decision to leave the club is totally understandable. At 27 and in his prime, the former Southampton man is keen to play regularly, which does not look like it will happen at Tottenham if he stays.

Tosin may have failed to prove himself at Chelsea across two seasons, but he’d be a handy option to replace Danso in De Zerbi’s squad. If a move happens, the Nigerian defender will become the first senior player to move directly from Chelsea to Tottenham, after Carlo Cudicini swapped clubs way back in 2009.
