Tottenham defender Kevin Danso is heading to Sunderland for the 2026/27 season.
With just a day left of the summer transfer window, the recruitment team at Tottenham Hotspur have been working round the clock. There has been no shortage of display of intent and ambition from the club’s hierarchy after a season that almost ended in a disaster.
Spurs have performed major surgery to their squad under head coach Roberto De Zerbi. As well as incomings, there have been several outgoings over the last two to three months. Roberto De Zerbi revealed last week that Kevin Danso, Richarlison and Pape Matar Sarr have all asked to leave the club for regular game time. It now seems Kevin Danso will get his wish fulfilled.
Sunderland strike loan agreement with Tottenham for Kevin Danso
According to a report from BBC Sport, Sunderland have agreed a loan deal with Tottenham for Kevin Danso with an option to buy.
The Black Cats had a loan bid rejected last week for the 27-year-old as they look to bolster their back line. But talks reopened after Danso pushed for a move away from N17, and he will now move to the Stadium of Light.
De Zerbi and Co. moved quickly in the summer to bring in Marcos Senesi and Jan Paul van Hecke to fortify their centre-back options. That, coupled with Micky van de Ven signing a new long-term contract before the start of the season, put Danso’s chances of clocking regular minutes in North London in limbo.
This prompted the Austrian to seek greener pastures after only arriving at Tottenham during the 2025 January transfer window. The defender never really got regular opportunities to cement his place in the Spurs’ first XI, owing to Cristian Romero and Van de Ven being the first-choice pair. Despite Romero sealing a move to Atletico Madrid, Danso’s position did not change as he has started the opening couple of Premier League games this season on the bench.
The Lilywhites’ imminent signing of Tosin Adarabioyo from Chelsea has opened the door for Danso to seal a temporary move to Sunderland. The Voitsberg-born star would provide Premier League experience and quality in central defence for Regis Le Bris’ side. He will also get opportunities to play in the continental competition, with the Black Cats having qualified for the Europa League.
