Mykhaylo Mudryk has joined Tottenham on a season-long loan from Chelsea.
Tottenham Hotspur and Chelsea don’t do transfer business with each other due to the bitter rivalry they share; in fact, the last player to move between the clubs was goalkeeper Carlo Cudicini back in 2009. However, fans of both clubs would have been taken aback on Monday when Spurs contacted Chelsea to enquire about Mykhaylo Mudryk.
Soon, speculation turned into concrete interest. The failed transfer pursuit of Iliman Ndiaye led Tottenham to shift their focus entirely to signing Mykhaylo Mudryk, who had not played for Chelsea since November 2024 due to off-field matters. The Ukrainian winger featured during pre-season for the Blues but did not make an appearance across the opening two games of the 2026/27 season.
Sensing a window of opportunity, backed by Roberto De Zerbi, the Lilywhites pounced on the player’s signature.
Tottenham announce Mykhaylo Mudryk signing on loan
Tottenham have officially announced the signing of Mudryk on loan until the end of the season. The deal includes a £75million option to buy the winger next summer.
Leeds United held talks with Chelsea over a loan deal, but once Spurs’ interest emerged, Mudryk gave his priority to becoming a part of De Zerbi’s project. The 26-year-old has not played a competitive game since November 2024 but has been keen to remain in the Premier League as he looks to build his match fitness and rhythm.
Upon signing for Tottenham, Mudryk told the club’s official website: “It’s a great feeling. I can’t wait to start training and playing for the Club, and I’m so excited to be reunited with Roberto De Zerbi.
“I’m a player who brings speed and creativity, and I want to help in both the offensive and defensive areas. I want to make the fans excited.
“I can see it’s a strong squad here with good players, and I’m looking forward to sharing a pitch and special moments with them.”
De Zerbi added: “Having worked with Misha earlier in his career, I know exactly what he can bring to our team.
“He has the quality to change a game with his speed and ability in one-vs-one situations, and is an exciting, attacking talent.
“I will demand a lot from Misha, and it is our job to help him find the best version of himself. If we do that, then he can become a very important player for us. I am very happy he chose to come here, and I cannot wait to work with him again.”
De Zerbi reunites with Mudryk
De Zerbi and Mudryk worked together at Shakhtar Donetsk. They enjoyed a strong working relationship in Ukraine, and De Zerbi will now hope he helps Mudryk resurrect his stuttering career.
The Spurs boss and his coaching staff must look to quickly get the winger back up to speed. With his explosive pace, directness and unpredictability, Mudryk could be a dangerous option to bring off the bench against tiring defences in the Premier League. De Zerbi knows him in and out, so that will play a massive role in getting the best out of the Ukrainian talent.
With the player announced, Mudryk may be included in the Tottenham squad against Nottingham Forest at City Ground on Saturday.
