Tottenham could compete with Aston Villa for the signing of Crystal Palace star in January.
It has been a busy past week for Tottenham Hotspur, particularly when it comes to incomings.
Spurs completed the signings of Savio and Omar Marmoush from Manchester City last week. Our boss Roberto De Zerbi said after Marmoush’s acquisition on a season-long loan that he expects another signing to happen before the transfer deadline. To everyone’s surprise, the club officials have been working on deals to sign two Chelsea players, Mykhaylo Mudryk and Tosin Adarabioyo.
After the failed pursuit of Everton’s Iliman Ndiaye, Tottenham shifted their focus to signing Mudryk. Reports suggest they have agreed on a season-long loan for the Ukrainian international with an option to buy. Meanwhile, Tosin is set to move across the capital for £7 million.
Tottenham likely to revisit move for Crystal Palace star in January
The Lilywhites have also been keeping close tabs on Crystal Palace striker Jean-Philippe Mateta. The Frenchman was keen on securing a move away from Selhurst Park during this transfer window. His relationship with the Eagles has soured in recent weeks after it was reported that the 29-year-old had decided to take Crystal Palace to FIFA over an invalid contract.
However, a hamstring injury sustained last week has dashed his hopes. This means Jean-Philippe Mateta is set to stay at Crystal Palace for now. According to a report from Football Insider, Tottenham and Aston Villa are set to revisit a deal for Mateta when the transfer window reopens in January. Both could turn to the centre-forward in the New Year if they need reinforcements in attack.
Aston Villa have already seen a bid rejected for the France international last month. The offer fell significantly short of Palace’s valuation of the player, thus, a move did not materialise. The Villans did not return with an improved bid, especially after learning of Mateta’s fresh hamstring injury. There’s every chance Unai Emery’s side will compete with Spurs for the signing of the 29-year-old in January.
As Mateta is in the final year of his contract, he’d be available for a cut-price deal in January. The striker will also be eligible to thrash out a pre-contract agreement with foreign clubs.
For Tottenham, the squad dynamics will dictate whether they will revive their interest in the Palace marksman in January. Hopefully, there are no major injury concerns as the season progresses and De Zerbi has enough firepower in his squad to deal with the challenges. If Richarlison departs before the transfer window slams shut, Spurs might move for Mateta then.
