Chances of a potential Roberto De Zerbi sack assessed by former Aston Villa CEO

Tottenham have endured a poor start to the 2026/27 season.

Tottenham Hotspur were among Europe’s biggest spenders in the recently concluded summer transfer window. They completed the signings of Mykhaylo Mudryk and Tosin Adarabioyo from Chelsea on deadline day to take the club’s spending up to £389 million.

The wholesale changes that head coach Roberto De Zerbi demanded at the end of last season have been made by the North London club after two successive 17th-place finishes in the Premier League. There is no question that Tottenham’s different departments are stronger than they were last season, with De Zerbi now having quality options and sufficient depth.

However, the performances on the pitch have not yet matched the spending. Tottenham have lost their opening two Premier League games to Brentford and Nottingham Forest, respectively. De Zerbi’s side currently lie rock-bottom in the table with zero points from their first two matches, having conceded five times and scored zero goals.

Keith Wyness reveals chances of Tottenham sacking Roberto De Zerbi

Spurs are desperate to bounce back on Saturday when they travel to Nottingham Forest. The pressure is already building on De Zerbi, who would want a rousing response from his boys at Nottingham Forest. It is fair to suggest that the high-profile signings have yet to hit the ground running this season and are clearly lacking match fitness despite having a full preseason under their belts.

Despite an underwhelming start to the new campaign, ex-Aston Villa CEO Keith Wyness believes De Zerbi isn’t under any immediate threat of losing his job. This is because the money that has been spent over the transfer window should give the 47-year-old time to turn results around.

“I don’t think we’re going to be talking about De Zerbi having a problem,” Keith Wyness exclusively told Football Insider.

“I think this (investment) is going to protect him enough to give him enough time to get this squad working. So, he might be okay.”

Tottenham have four games before September’s international break

Before the season’s first international break, Spurs have four matches in all competitions. A game against Forest at City Ground will be followed by Everton’s visit to the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium on September 12.

Then De Zerbi and Co. travel to Anfield to take on Liverpool in the Carabao Cup third round three days later, before returning to N17 for the home game against Aston Villa on September 19. On paper, neither of them are easy games, and the Lilywhites have to fight tooth and nail to taste success in each of those.

Starting with the Forest fixture on Saturday, De Zerbi’s boys face a true test of character and resilience. We must show ruthless composure in the final third to silence the raucous City Ground faithful. Getting the opening goal remains absolutely crucial if Tottenham hope to claim their first points on board.
