Nottingham Forest plan to revisit deal for 20-year-old Tottenham midfielder who was convinced by De Zerbi to stay

Tottenham midfielder Lucas Bergvall was the subject of enquiries from few Premier League rivals.

Transfer deadline day saw a lot of ins and outs at Tottenham Hotspur. The officials at Hotspur Way were being forced into some tough decisions to further shape up the squad.

Kevin Danso was allowed to leave for Sunderland, and he was quickly replaced by Tosin Adarabioyo from Chelsea. Spurs also agreed a loan deal to sign Mykhailo Mudryk from their London rivals. It also felt like Lucas Bergvall would leave the club on deadline day.

The Tottenham midfielder became the shock late subject of an enquiry from Chelsea. Interestingly, the Swede was open to a move to Stamford Bridge, but Spurs were reluctant to sanction an exit having allowed Pape Matar Sarr to join Juventus.

Nottingham Forest plan to revisit deal for Lucas Bergvall

Before Chelsea, Nottingham Forest were firmly interested in signing Lucas Bergvall. The Tricky Trees made an approach for the 20-year-old earlier in the summer transfer window, but Tottenham rejected their advances. After frustrating attempts to land Bergvall, they switched their focus to Everton midfielder Harrison Armstrong.

Nottingham Forest made a £40m bid plus a potential sell-on clause for Armstrong, which Everton accepted. However, following the backlash from the supporters, the Everton board decided to call off a proposed deal to sell the teenager.

Now, according to a report from The Telegraph, Nottingham Forest are planning to revisit a deal for Bergvall when the transfer window reopens in January. The Midlands club have not given up on the prospect of signing the Scandinavian talent, who had told Tottenham that he wanted to leave for a club where he would get regular playing time.

However, Roberto De Zerbi held lengthy talks with the versatile midfielder and convinced him to stay, even though the Lilywhites had valued him at £60million. Forest could try to sign the young gun at the start of 2027, with new manager Oliver Glasner an admirer.

Bergvall started Tottenham’s season-opener against Brentford but was hooked at half time. The midfielder endured a torrid 45 minutes, as Spurs were comprehensively beaten 3-0 by Brentford. He was an unused substitute in the 2-0 defeat to Newcastle United last weekend, with De Zerbi preferring a midfield trio of Sandro Tonali, Rodrigo Bentancur and Mateus Fernandes ahead of the Swede.

If the situation does not improve in the coming months and he continues to get limited opportunities, Bergvall could push for an exit in January. Should that happen, it’d give Forest a boost to revive their interest in the Stockholm-born prodigy. Given that Glasner’s side are lacking a tempo-controlling midfielder, Bergvall might be intrigued by the prospect of making the move to the City Ground in 2027.
