Tottenham boss has called Lucas Bergvall a “big player” ahead of the trip to Nottingham Forest.
Tottenham Hotspur enjoyed an extremely productive summer transfer window, signing as many as 10 players. They brought in Mykhaylo Mudryk and Tosin Adarabioyo from Chelsea on deadline day, while allowing some of the fringe players to depart.
There were reports of Lucas Bergvall attracting interest from Chelsea on deadline day. Ultimately, it turned out to be nothing and he remains a part of Roberto De Zerbi’s squad. The surgery of the midfield unit with the big-money acquisitions of Sandro Tonali and Mateus Fernandes had left Lucas Bergvall looking for greener pastures earlier in the summer transfer window.
Nottingham Forest and Newcastle United were keen to sign the Swedish international. They had even launched bids, but Tottenham turned them down as they did not meet their £60million of the player.
Roberto De Zerbi calls Lucas Bergvall a “big player”
De Zerbi made it clear during the summer that the club will part ways with players who are not fully committed to staying in north London. Bergvall was considering his future following the arrivals of Fernandes and Tonali as he feared he would not get enough game time.
However, the 20-year-old ended up staying, and De Zerbi has now revealed that the player is happy to continue developing at White Hart Lane. He also added that the youngster has huge potential and is a big player for Tottenham.
“Yes, but after 10 days in the pre-season, Lucas came, and his agent as well went to Johan Lange to say, ‘Lucas is happy to stay,’ and Lucas showed me he wanted to stay. I would like to play with him, I would like to put the focus on him because he is another big, big in terms of the potential of the player. He is another big player,” De Zerbi said in his press conference (h/t Football London).
Nottingham Forest plan to revisit Bergvall deal
Spurs firmly established their internal stance regarding Bergvall throughout the summer, declaring that the talented midfielder will not be sold. De Zerbi also held talks with the player to assure him of consistent minutes and a big role in his squad this season.
This changed the Swede’s mind, and he committed himself to De Zerbi’s project. This poured cold water on Nottingham Forest links, but latest reports suggest that the Midlands club will revisit a deal for Bergvall when the transfer window reopens in January. If the Stockholm-born prodigy does not get sufficient starting opportunities in the coming weeks and months, it’d encourage Forest to knock on Tottenham’s door again.
