Tottenham could raid the Italian market for a talented midfielder in 2027.
Tottenham Hotspur are yet to get going in the Premier League, despite a mammoth summer spending. They have opened their campaign with back-to-back league defeats to Brentford and Newcastle United, respectively.
In both defeats, Spurs got outmuscled and overrun in midfield, the problems that were prevalent last season. This is regardless of Roberto De Zerbi spending big on central midfielders Sandro Tonali and Mateus Fernandes. Tonali, in particular, has struggled to control the flow of play, with Roberto De Zerbi putting it down to the Italian international’s lack of fitness.
As De Zerbi hopes to quickly turn things around on the pitch, it looks like the N17 officials have already started planning behind the scenes for the next transfer window.
Tottenham hold informal talks with AS Roma talent
According to an exclusive report from Swiss source 4-4-2.com, Tottenham are among several clubs to have held informal talks with the representatives of AS Roma midfielder Niccolo Pisilli.
While AS Roma’s management and coaching staff want to keep the player at all costs, Europe’s top clubs are already working hard to lay the groundwork for a move next year. Nottingham Forest and Newcastle United are two more Premier League clubs to show an interest in the 21-year-old, while Serie A trio Juventus, AC Milan and Inter Milan are all in the running.
AS Roma were aware of the heavy interest in Niccolo Pisilli during the summer but did not plan to let the homegrown talent go under any circumstances. The Giallorossi feel the Italian is a big part of the club’s future plans; however, to change their mind, the report adds an offer worth €60m or more could be needed in 2027.
Pisilli has started the 2026/27 campaign well, netting a goal in two games for Gian Piero Gasperini’s side. The Rome-born talent is a box-to-box midfielder by trade with high work ethic, energy and physical dynamism. He has a strong sense for timing his attacking runs into the penalty box and a knack for scoring goals.
At this juncture, De Zerbi has several options in the middle of the park, regardless of allowing Pape Matar Sarr to join Juventus. Lucas Bergvall wanted to leave the club, but De Zerbi held talks and convinced him to stay. However, if he doesn’t get regular minutes, Bergvall could push for an exit when the transfer window reopens on January 1.
Pisilli could be viewed as a potential replacement for Bergvall, but he will want assurance of regular playing time from De Zerbi to leave Roma for Tottenham. Also, the Lilywhites will have to pay a premium and beat competition from several top European clubs for the Italian midfielder’s signature.
