Tottenham are keeping close tabs on talented Bundesliga playmaker.
Tottenham Hotspur did not hesitate to loosen their purse strings in the recently concluded summer transfer window, bringing in as many as 10 new players. On deadline day, they recruited Mykhaylo Mudryk and Tosin Adarabioyo from Chelsea.
The North Londoners broke their transfer record twice, first by signing Mateus Fernandes from West Ham and then Sandro Tonali from Newcastle United. Spending a combined £185m on Fernandes and Tonali shows how important reinforcing the midfield unit was for Roberto De Zerbi. The Italian’s demands to add creativity and goals were also fulfilled by the hierarchy with the signings of Savio, Omar Marmoush and Mudryk.
Not even a week has gone by since the closing of the summer transfer window, and it looks like the Hotspur Way chiefs are putting plans in place for the next window.
Freiburg midfielder on Tottenham’s radar
According to German outlet FussballDaten, Tottenham are one of the clubs interested in signing the Freiburg attacking midfielder Yuito Suzuki, who plays a bit like Michael Olise. A fee of around €35-40 million will be required to begin negotiations with Freiburg for the 24-year-old, who is also being monitored by AC Milan and Real Sociedad.
Yuito Suzuki joined Freiburg from Brondby in the summer of 2025 and enjoyed a decent debut campaign in the Bundesliga, registering four goals and three assists in 25 appearances. After being a part of the Japan squad at the World Cup 2026, the creative attacker has begun the new Bundesliga campaign in terrific form. He scored a hat-trick in Freiburg’s 4-1 win over Werder Bremen in gameweek 1.
Suzuki’s displays in the German top flight have caught the attention of several clubs, including Tottenham. The long-term injury to Xavi Simons has left the North London side short of a reliable attacking midfielder. Dejan Kulusevski has not kicked a ball since suffering a serious knee injury in May 2025, while James Maddison continues to be injury-prone.
A player of Suzuki’s technical ability, energy and versatility can step straight into Tottenham’s system. The Japanese international’s ability to create chances and chip in with goals makes him an attractive option for Spurs, who are desperate to add more cutting edge in the attacking third. While Freiburg are reluctant to lose one of their cornerstones, financial pressure could open the door if Tottenham present a convincing package.
With Suzuki tied down until 2029, this won’t be a straightforward deal. However, Tottenham have shown a willingness to back De Zerbi’s vision, and landing a flexible, tenacious and battle-tested playmaker in January could prove decisive in their push for a top-four finish.
