‘Never-ending cycle’- Troy Deeney slams Roberto De Zerbi and Tottenham following dismal start to the new season

Tottenham are struggling to perform well on a regular basis under Roberto De Zerbi.

Tottenham’s start to the season has not gone according to plan under Roberto de Zerbi. The Lilywhites are winless in their opening three matches of the new campaign after failing to score in all three games. The performances have been mediocre, with little real harmony on the pitch. The match-going fans are also beginning to lose patience, and it seems as though De Zerbi is struggling to get the best out of his players this season.

The North Londoners showed immense ambition and intent in the transfer market after bringing in ten new players this summer. The club backed Roberto De Zerbi by spending £394m on players the Italian tactician wanted at N17. As a result, Spurs underwent a major rebuild over the last two months, strengthening the defence, midfield, and attack at the same time.

However, it is fair to suggest that none of the new signings have truly stepped up for the Lilywhites in recent weeks. An opening-day defeat to Brentford, followed by a dismal home performance against Newcastle United and now a stalemate against Nottingham Forest, has led fans to believe that Roberto de Zerbi’s men are struggling to adapt to the Italian tactician’s coaching style. Not only that, but the players also appear to be struggling to get on the same wavelength as their manager this season.

Roberto de Zerbi needs to sort his Tottenham team quickly

Tottenham did well to bring in Premier League-proven players this summer. The plan was to sign players who could make an instant impact at N17 this season and help the Lilywhites compete at the top end of the Premier League table. However, it is fair to say that Roberto de Zerbi has struggled to get the best out of his players, with the North Londoners earning just one point from their opening three league matches.

Troy Deeney has now claimed that De Zerbi would be the only person to blame if Spurs fail to return to winning ways in the Premier League in the coming weeks. Speaking on talkSPORT (via X), Deeney said,

“I don’t know what they’re trying to build, I still don’t understand the plan. The only person who can get blamed moving forward will be De Zerbi, so he has no more excuses. They spent money, they bought players in, now they’re going to start blaming the manager and it’s just a never-ending cycle with that football club.”

Troy Deeney claims Spurs made a mistake by giving Roberto De Zerbi a say in the transfer business this summer. If things go south, then the fans could turn against the Italian tactician, especially as he was completely backed by the club in the recently concluded transfer window. For now, it seems like nothing is going the North London club’s way, and it is only a matter of time before the spotlight turns towards De Zerbi if the players fail to step up on the pitch.

The time has come for the Lilywhites to clinch their first league win of the season next weekend. Spurs host Everton in the Premier League this week, and there is strong hope that Roberto De Zerbi’s men could grab all three points at N17. The North Londoners have a strong home record against the Toffees in recent years, winning their last five league encounters at N17 convincingly. So, the onus now falls on the Spurs players to step up and do everything it takes to climb up the league table in the coming days.
