Stephen Kelly feels Sunderland have made an “astute signing” by bringing in 27-year-old former Tottenham defender

The 27yo left Tottenham to join Sunderland in the summer transfer window.

Tottenham Hotspur spent heavily to reinforce several areas of the squad over the summer. It all started with fixing the defensive problems that has been well-documented in the last two seasons.

Spurs signed Marcos Senesi, Jan Paul van Hecke and Andy Robertson to improve their defensive options. At the same time, they sold Cristian Romero, Djed Spence and Luka Vuskovic, whilst loaning out Radu Dragusin to Fiorentina with an obligation to buy in 2027.

On deadline day, the Lilywhites surprised the supporters by signing Tosin Adarabioyo from bitter rivals Chelsea. This happened in the wake of Kevin Danso’s abrupt departure to Sunderland after he had asked to leave. The Black Cats paid a £2.5million loan fee for the Austrian international, while the obligation of £22.25m will be triggered if they stay in the Premier League this season.

Former Tottenham defender makes admission on Sunderland signing Kevin Danso

Kevin Danso moved to Sunderland after expressing a desire to leave Tottenham in search of more regular first-team football. The 27-year-old made 52 appearances for the Lilywhites after signing from RC Lens in January 2025. The defender scored his first goal for the North Londoners with his first touch in the 5-1 win over Charlton Athletic in the Carabao Cup last month.

The Austrian was handed his Sunderland debut at the weekend against Brentford at the weekend. The contest ended in a 1-1 stalemate, with Danso completing the full 90 minutes and putting in a stellar display alongside Dan Ballard at the back.

Former Tottenham full-back Stephen Kelly was impressed with what he saw from Danso in N17 throughout a difficult last season and insisted Sunderland have made a ‘shrewd addition’ to their defensive ranks.

“Kevin Danso, for me, I thought for Spurs last season, and I’m heavily invested in them, he was one of the defenders that came out with a lot of credit for last season. I think that’s a really astute signing,” Stephen Kelly said on Sky Sports News (h/t Sunderland Echo).

Danso now has Europa League football alongside domestic competition to look forward to at Stadium of Light under Regis Le Bris, something Spurs cannot offer this season. The way he has started for Sunderland gives us an impression that the 27-year-old will be revered by their fans. Alongside Ballard, the former Tottenham man can give the defensive solidity and stability Le Bris has been craving.

It will be interesting to see how Danso performs throughout the campaign, and our fans must be hoping that his departure doesn’t come back to bite De Zerbi’s side.
