Tottenham made checks on the Championship defender during the second half of last season.
There was a lot of buzz around Tottenham Hotspur back in the summer transfer window as they signed 10 players. At the same time, they also let go of several experienced players and young talents.
For a club whose transfer model revolves around trusting youth and integrating them into the first team in recent years, the fans were surprised by the departures of some highly-rated talents. Luka Vuskovic, Will Lankshear, Ashley Phillips and a couple more were sold, whilst academy graduate Dane Scarlett was allowed to move to Leyton Orient on a free transfer.
To fully satisfy their homegrown quota, Tottenham officially included the club’s Under-21 summer signing Jacob Knightbridge in their 25-man Premier League squad. Knightbridge has filled the void created by Scarlett’s departure to Leyton Orient.
Tottenham join transfer race for highly-rated Blackburn Rovers defender
Spurs want to continue staying committed to adding to their pool of young talent. This has led the club officials to keep tabs on a rising Championship talent.
According to a report from TEAMtalk, Tottenham have been closely monitoring Blackburn Rovers defender Tom Atcheson. The youngster was the subject of summer enquiries from Manchester City, Manchester United, Liverpool, Newcastle United, Sunderland and Crystal Palace, illustrating the Northern Ireland international’s ceiling in the game.
A product of the Blackburn Rovers academy, Tom Atcheson only made his Championship debut in December 2025 and has quickly established himself as a regular under former coach Michael O’Neill, underlining his meteoric rise within the squad. Under new boss Tony Mowbray, the lanky centre-back has become one of the first names on the teamsheet this season.
The Ewood Park-based outfit secured the 19-year-old’s future in April by tying him down to a new contract. As the man is becoming a sought-after commodity, Blackburn will not want to lose their valuable asset like him easily, and they could demand a premium.
Difficult deal to crack
Spurs’ interest in Atcheson isn’t surprising. The Lilywhites are increasingly positioning themselves as a developmental club, signing young players and nurturing them with a view to helping them become first-team players. There are some highly regarded academy talents waiting to break into the first team.
Atcheson has been showing signs of becoming a genuine superstar in the future. However, signing the Blackburn starlet would not be easy, as there are several of our rivals vying to pounce on him in 2027. So, for any deal to happen for Spurs, it would not only require them to stay ambitious, but also to devise a long-term plan for his progress.
