Tottenham youngster has committed his future to the club.

Tottenham Hotspur directed a major overhaul of their squad this summer, with 10 fresh faces arriving through the door and several players leaving.

Cristian Romero, Luka Vuskovic, Guglielmo Vicario, Kevin Danso, Pape Matar Sarr and Djed Spence were among those to depart N17. Another player who was considering leaving the club all summer has now shocked everyone by committing his future to the club.

Lucas Bergvall signs new contract

There was a lot of speculation surrounding the future of Lucas Bergvall since the start of the summer transfer window. Nottingham Forest and Newcastle United were two clubs interested in the player. In fact, both clubs also had bids rejected for the Swedish talent before the rumours were finally put to rest by head coach Roberto De Zerbi, who announced that the youngster will be staying at the club.

In a surprise development, Tottenham have now officially announced that Lucas Bergvall has put pen to paper on a new deal.

“I think we’re building something great here,” Bergvall said to the club’s media.

“It’s an exciting time for the club, and that’s why I’m happy to extend my contract.

“I’m always trying to achieve as much as possible, to be the best version of myself both on and off the pitch, and I know this is the right place to do that.

“Personally, my goal is to produce more for the team – performances, goals and assists – to help as much as I can. I’m getting better every day in training, and I’m looking forward to what will be a really good season ahead.”

Roberto De Zerbi also praised Bergvall’s mentality and believes there is still much more to come from the youngster.

“Every day in training you can see Lucas’ desire to learn, improve and push himself to the highest level,” De Zerbi added.

“Lucas is brave, he wants responsibility and has the personality to play in big moments. He also understands that development is a process, and he has shown a fantastic attitude towards working on the areas of his game where he can become even better.

“I believe his best football is still ahead of him and we want to give Lucas the platform to reach his full potential.”

Surprise twist of events

Tottenham fought off competition from Barcelona to sign Bergvall from Djurgarden in the summer of 2024. After a strong debut season, he signed a contract extension in April 2025, which ran until 2031. The midfielder has now extended his contract and will hope to establish himself as a mainstay in the side under De Zerbi.

The 20-year-old has already made 80 appearances in all competitions for the North Londoners and has won 14 senior caps for Sweden, including featuring at this summer’s World Cup. The Scandinavian talent started against Brentford in Tottenham’s Premier League opener but was an unused substitute against Newcastle and Nottingham Forest, despite playing all 90 minutes in the Carabao Cup game against Charlton Athletic.

Barely any fan had envisioned such a twist of fate for Bergvall. The youngster penning a new deal reinforces the fact that he sees his long-term future at White Hart Lane and wants to develop under De Zerbi’s watchful eyes.
