Lucas Bergvall has committed his future to Tottenham by putting pen to paper on a new deal.
Tottenham Hotspur fans were thrilled to come across the news of Lucas Bergvall penning fresh terms with the club on Friday afternoon.
The 20-year-old has played a regular role for the North London club since joining from Djurgarden in the summer of 2024. The central midfielder has had his fair share of ups and downs, which isn’t a surprise due to the chaotic environment in N17 and the managerial merry-go-round.
Following a narrow escape from relegation last term, the club’s hierarchy decided to back head coach Roberto De Zerbi with a mammoth transfer kitty in the past transfer window. Spurs brought in as many as 10 new players, including two central midfielders Sandro Tonali and Mateus Fernandes.
This resulted in speculation over Lucas Bergvall’s future in the summer. The Swedish talent had internally expressed his desire to leave Tottenham amid concrete interest from Nottingham Forest and Newcastle United.
Roberto De Zerbi opens up on Lucas Bergvall signing a new deal
It had looked as if a move could be on the cards, before Roberto De Zerbi intervened and convinced Bergvall to stay put at White Hart Lane. And in a shock development, the Lilywhites announced that the player has committed his future to the club by signing a new contract.
Ahead of the Everton game, De Zerbi was asked about Bergvall’s decision to make a U-turn on his future and sign a new deal. The Italian tactician praised the youngster for his attitude and efforts from the beginning of the pre-season tour but insisted that he still has a lot of work to do to reach the heights expected of him.
“By the end of the season he will play many games. He has to improve. We have to help him improve, and he has to keep working like he is doing. From the beginning of pre-season, he has been fantastic on the pitch,” De Zerbi said in his press conference (h/t Football London).
De Zerbi is Tottenham’s present and future
The competition for places at Tottenham, especially in midfield, is indeed intense following the big-money arrivals of Tonali and Fernandes in the summer. The strong competition in the engine room has seen Bergvall start just one game in the Premier League so far, which came in the 3-0 defeat at Brentford. The Sweden international has been an unused substitute in the past two league games against Newcastle and Nottingham Forest.
Yet, going by his own admission after putting pen to paper on a new deal, the Stockholm native is convinced that he is in the right place to nurture his talents and unlock his sky-high potential. At 20, Bergvall represents the present and future of Spurs, and the club’s trust in the versatile midfielder has been backed by the latest contract extension.
