Lucas Bergvall has penned a new long-term deal with Tottenham.
Lucas Bergvall signed a new long-term deal with Tottenham Hotspur on Friday afternoon. The club announced the fresh deal but did not disclose details. The youngster’s previous contract was set to expire in 2031.
The Sweden international had drawn interest from Nottingham Forest, Newcastle United and Aston Villa during the summer transfer window after he told the club in the offseason that he wanted to leave for greener pastures. Chelsea also made a deadline day enquiry to Spurs over the midfielder.
Despite that uncertainty, Tottenham resisted the possibility of a sale and have now formalised Lucas Bergvall’s place in their long-term plans with fresh terms. The youngster has been impressing in training, which led Roberto De Zerbi to praise his effort earlier this month.
Fabrizio Romano reveals true reasons for Lucas Bergvall’s U-turn at Tottenham
Bergvall’s future appeared to be over at White Hart Lane this summer when the Lilywhites invested heavily in the signings of Mateus Fernandes and Sandro Tonali, who both arrived in N17 for a combined package of £185m. This led to Tottenham reluctantly showing a willingness to listen to offers for the Scandinavian talent.
Eventually, though, nothing materialised, with Spurs’ steep £60m price tag deterring his suitors. And the saga took a completely different twist earlier this week when it was announced that the central midfielder has now signed an extension to his deal.
Now, reputed journalist Fabrizio Romano has revealed that Bergvall’s decision to pen fresh terms represents a surprising turn of events, as the player could have left Tottenham to join one of the Premier League clubs in the summer.
“Lucas Bergvall has signed a new contract at Tottenham Hotspur. That’s a very surprising one, probably. If you had asked me in June, I probably would not have predicted this,” Fabrizio Romano said on his YouTube channel.
“Why? Because Lucas Bergvall’s initial idea was to leave Tottenham in this summer transfer window, and not because he’s not happy at Tottenham. I’m also told that Lucas Bergvall is a big fan of how Roberto De Zerbi wants to play football, so the connection is very good with everyone.
“He just had a feeling that after signing Mateus Fernandes and Sandro Tonali, and with Tottenham having no European football, he was not going to play football, basically. So, he wanted to go and play.
“He had several possibilities. One was from Nottingham Forest, another was from a club abroad.
“There were also some calls from Chelsea on Deadline Day to understand the situation of the player, although they never sent a bid. So, there was a lot of interest around Lucas Bergvall…”
Romano also explained why De Zerbi wanted to keep Bergvall at the club.
“But the decision made by Tottenham Hotspur, in a very clear way with the player and his camp during the summer transfer window, was: despite this desire from Lucas, stay with us, continue with us. We will give you a contract because we believe in you,” he added.
“Tottenham didn’t want to lose the player. Now they have reached an agreement on a new contract, with an improved salary for Lucas Bergvall, who is going to be part of Tottenham’s future.”
Bergvall- present and future of Tottenham
Bergvall has made 80 appearances for Spurs in all competitions since joining from Swedish club Djurgarden in 2024. He is regarded internally as a player with huge ceiling, and his decision to stay suggests alignment has been restored after a summer in which his future looked uncertain.
Spurs have done well to secure the 20-year-old’s future, with De Zerbi counting on his talent now and in the future. The Swede has a long way to go in his career and can fulfil his vast potential under De Zerbi’s guidance.
