Tottenham are hoping to get back to winning ways in the Premier League under Roberto De Zerbi.
Tottenham are in all sorts of trouble right now following a slow start to the new Premier League season. The Lilywhites have failed to score in each of their opening four matches of the new campaign, forcing Roberto de Zerbi to make regular changes to his team from week to week. Despite spending an abnormal amount of money during the summer transfer window, the North Londoners are struggling to find the right balance, leaving the club languishing in the bottom half of the league table.
Match-going Spurs fans witnessed yet another goalless draw as De Zerbi’s men failed to overcome Everton on home soil on Saturday. The players struggled to create clear-cut opportunities, and it became increasingly evident as the game progressed that the Lilywhites were unlikely to breach the Toffees’ defence. The boos that rang out around N17 at full-time provided enough evidence that De Zerbi is coming under immense pressure at the club, with the tide seemingly turning against him following a winless start to the season.
However, despite the poor start and the team’s inability to find the back of the net, it is still too early to switch on the panic stations at N17. Slowly but surely, the performances are improving, and Roberto de Zerbi is beginning to find the right balance within his squad on matchdays. The only thing missing is goals. And that should eventually come once the North Londoners find their rhythm and build momentum in the final third in the upcoming matches.
Roberto de Zerbi still has time to turn it around at Tottenham
Let’s not forget that Roberto de Zerbi played a huge role in helping Tottenham avoid relegation last season. Arriving during the latter stages of the campaign, the Italian tactician ensured that the players responded to his demands and gave their all on the pitch. And it is because of his short-term brilliance that the North Londoners decided to back him in the summer window by bringing in players who could make an instant impact at N17 this summer.
So, taking everything into consideration, Pete O’Rourke believes that De Zerbi still retains the support of the club’s hierarchy. Speaking on Football Insider, O’Rourke said,
“He’s definitely got time on his side, De Zerbi, for what he did last year when he came in at the end of last season. He rescued the club and made sure they didn’t suffer the ignominy of Premier League relegation as well. So, I think we can’t forget that. He did a good job in the short-term to keep Spurs up, and now the club have invested heavily in the summer to reshape the squad.”
The journalist added,
“So it will take time for these players to bed in. They have to get used to their new surroundings to perform at the highest level, and Tottenham are willing to give them time and give De Zerbi time for that to happen despite these early problems.”
How much time is too much time?
It is still early days for the fans to turn on Roberto de Zerbi this season. Despite remaining winless in their opening four matches of the new campaign, the Spurs faithful must continue to back the Italian tactician as the club aims to compete at the top end of the league table by the end of the season. And as Pete O’Rourke rightly points out, the new players are still getting used to their surroundings at N17 and adapting to De Zerbi’s playing style in recent weeks.
The main problem is finding the back of the net. Once that issue is resolved, the floodgates could open and Spurs could soon be back to their best. A positive factor in all of this is that the Lilywhites have seemingly addressed their defensive issues, registering two consecutive clean sheets in their opening four Premier League matches. So, Roberto De Zerbi is slowly beginning to turn the tide around at N17 this season.
